Question regarding slab serial numbers and time period of grading...

Just curious if anyone knows if the serial numbers on PCGS/NGC slabs have any order or temporality to them. Put a different way, can anyone reasonably estimate when a coin had been graded based on the serial number of the slab? Are they in order? Random? Or would one have just as much luck by analyzing the type of slab as opposed to the serial number?
