West German 50 pfennig 1950-G - Does anyone know anything about when/why this was struck?

Found this coin in a old binder. The flip says, "illegally struck." What exactly does this mean? Any German collectors out there that can fill in the details?

  • Nice looking coin, never thought I'd be admiring one of these so much but the photos are awsome.

The Krause catalogue says the following on the 1950G: "The 1950G dated coin was restruck without authorization
by a mint official using genuine dies - quantity unknown".

It also says $750 in Unc, doesn't mention BU so you're sitting on a winner.

I believe the coins were struck with the 1950 date frozen up until the 1966 dated coins came out, then they started changing the dates every year. If I am not mistaken the mint official struck the coins ca 1952-3 and then was caught ca. 1955 or so. I believe there may have been other denominations like the 2 DM coin that were also struck.

Looking at the date on that coin, compared to some of the ones I have... it looks mushy, of course it could be the pic or my aging eyes. Is this your coin? Do you know where it came from? I am always on the lookout for coins like this at coin shows. I find that there are a LOT of coin dealers around my area that just DO NOT take the time to attribute their world coins. I find a lot of good pickups just browsing the bulk bins. If you got this one for nothing then you are THE MAN!
  • Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the coin you have pictured is very common. The "illegally struck coin" refers to a 1950 dated coin that used the old design of 1949 (BANK DEUTSCHER LANDER). In 1950, the design was changed to BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, which was the issue struck from 1950 to 1966 with the date frozen to 1950.

I agree ... it's all in the legend.

I have an identical 1950 G 50 Pfennig PCGS MS-65 to the one you have. It cost me $20.

Ahhh good catch! I can't believe I missed that!
  • Oops, my bad, I missed that too, too busy looking at the illegaly struck bit to take notice of the actual appearance. I'm sure we've all had that happen where we get all excited due to missing the obvious.

These are tough in true unc but fairly common with light circulation.
