Did you know you can no longer have the following text in an eBay auction?

"Insurance is optional"

I use Blackthorne and last week, if you try to start an auction with that text, it will not go through...

Yes, and it's an excellent move on eBay's part. Too many sellers never understood that insurance is their responsibility, not the buyer's.

I agree as well.....haven't sold anything on ebay in months, but even I knew that was a change (lot of posts on these boards).
Too many sellers either chisel people or get kranky if someone doesn't pay something that is "optional" and a problem happens.

As a buyer, I expect to get what I paid for, in a timely fashion and in the condition I paid for it, and with no "optional" or "added" fees.
As a seller, I have either always included insurance into the cost, sent it at my own risk (self-insured with no money out to the buyer), or paid for it myself if I thought that was needed on a case-by-case basis.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Before Ebay did this you used to see things like " INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL BUT I WONT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS"

Although the seller has always been responsible for lost or stolen items whether they realized it or not.
  • Sellers are still entitled to charge for insurance as part of shipping. It just cant be optional.

I charge for and insure everything after a problem with a board member here. Only time in almost 10 years I had something "not arrive" despite being signed for.

I hate to admit it but years ago I did the same thing. Sell a coin and ask the buyer to pay for insurance.

Today I go the generous route. Shipping and insurance free. I've done that for more than a year. You'd think I'd have 5 stars on shipping cost DSR's. But buyers don't even bother to check before leaving feedback. How can free get any friggin' better?

I live in the Bay Area and have friends at ebay. One, a part time employee of mine whose full time job at ebay is kinda lofty, says the reason ebay doesn't give an automatic 5-star assignment for free shipping is that there are sellers who use 3rd party check out systems and can mess with ebay's monitoring systems.

I give up. The ebay system is hopelessly twisted. BST is the way to go.
    Lance.
