Re-slabbing for a Pedigree

I'm seriously thinking about having my 1823/2 Bust dime in an NGC AU58 star holder re-certified with the Garrett pedigree. I have a copy of the page of the Bowers & Ruddy catalog I plan to submit with the coin. I have solicited input from a few collectors/dealers and they believe it will in fact recieve the pedigree. My question is... Should I send it to PCGS and for-go the star?. I am inclined to do so since this particular coin does not possess the toning qualities that one typically would expect with the star designation. It is white with light grey devices. How important is the star anyway? I am not concerned with the few extra points the NGC registry set program offers. - Ed

  • i would be careful, i recently sent in a Battle Creek coin, it came back without the pedigree, and i had to argue with them for about a week that it was a BC coin, they told me they didnt have it listed as one in their database and i had to provide a slabbed shot before it was reholdered, what a PITA.

Discuss it with a PCGS rep (preferrably in person) before submitting.
Make sure all T's are crossed, i's dotted, and that it will be guaranteed with the pedigree before spending your money and rolling the dice
  • If it is an unmistakable plate match to the Garrett catalog, it will slab with the pedigree with no issues. Trust me, I know.

As for losing the star, that's your call. It may have value to some people.
  • The star is meaningless. Eye appeal is subjective.

most battle creek coins are not appealing and they still have stars.

That's a slam dunk plate match and either service will add the pedigree but I'd go with PCGS because I really dislike the NGC prongs.

I agree with Boiler, in addition I don't think the star is going to do anything for you that the pedigree wouldn't (as far as added value goes.) The pedigree on the holder would be a big deal for me, the star is by far secondary. If it's important to you just send it in to CAC for premium quality designation, I'm sure you will get it.

Yes it is subjective, as is a numerical grade.

Do not use the phone rep, those reps sometimes give you the wrong info.....in person rep if possible.

I had a phone rep check with a "senior rep" then told me it was OK to send the coin (trying to cross from ICG pedigree).

I got an email stating that they would not cross it, also said that they would refund my mailing fees (both ways). YEAH RIGHT.

Still waiting ......going on 8 months.

I went back and fourth with Customer service on an issue. They told me one thing in a string of emails. I sent the emails along with the order, and after all the research I did, they wouldn't honor what the told me they would do. I would be very careful or you could wind up with a broken promiss and a coin without a star and without a pedigree.
