Adventures in copper-Baltimore

funny story about Charmy and my adventure with an indian cent...

It was Saturday late afternoon and I had a nice indian I wanted charmy to take a look at. I ran up the aisle to her table and had a seat as I told her I was bringing this coin by. Another gentleman who was just at my table with a question about an indian was at her table, he had asked me some questions about an error premium and I simply said the penny lady is who you need to see about that as I can simply just guess but if its copper she will know.

So charmy is going through his coins and chit chatting about this and that, charmy grabs the indian I brought to show her and takes another look. We all chit chat for about ten minutes then the gentlemen leaves. Charmy looks up and says "okay where is that indian", I was like "..uh you had it". She looks around for a second and doesn't locate the coin. We both think that maybe the gentleman accidentally picked it up with his coins and put it in his box. I begin the frantic hunt tracking down this 1k coin. After running from one end of the show to the other(its a large show) I run back to Charmys table and inform her I cant find the guy (at this point I almost start to panic)She says "okay start packing my coins and I will find him". So here I am sitting there with Charmys bazillion copper coins and attempting to pack them the way she described. After about 10 minutes she comes back and informs me she located the gentlmen and did go through his box of coins as well as his backpack and no coin. We start to check the floor, in the cases, We throw around a couple of ideas involving an invisible person snagging the coin, then We put our heads together and I say maybe check your binder you had out earlier as it might have gotten tossed in there. She unpacks the binder and sure enough there is the coin in between a couple of price sheets that we just spent the last half hour attempting to locate. We both let out a hugh sigh of relief as well as a good laugh. I then let her know I did my best to pack the coins as she had stated but I think I may have gotten one or two out of place. All in all it was a very funny half hour and I think we both got a kick out of the whole ordeal.

I must say that charmy is simply a class act and one of the best dealers I have ever dealt with. Her knowledge of copper is simply stunning and the stuff she can point out on a coin makes me think she might just have microscopic eyes. I am putting together my set of wheats and I am 100% sure that if its quality copper she is the one to see.

Great story, and high praise for Charmy! Good to see a "lost coin" story with a happy ending once in a while.

I can tell you, though it is pretty funny now, it sure wasn't at the time! I didn't tell Chris at the time, but before I found the guy we thought might have accidentally packed the coin with the other coins he was showing me, I even went to the security people and described him so that if they saw him, they could at least ask him about the coin. They immediately began looking around for the guy, but luckily I found him pretty quickly. The guy was was so nice and cooperative and searched every nook and cranny of his bag, his pockets, etc. And when I went back to my table to tell Chris he didn't have the coin, instead of questioning me about the guy and his coin, poor Chris was apologizing about whether he packed my coins correctly! I was starting to get a little panicky because I had to finish packing all my coins in order to catch my flight but didn't want to leave until Chris had his coin. And it was Chris who finally suggested I look in the notebook that was laying on my case which I had already packed in my suitcase. I couldn't believe it when I opened it and felt the lump from the coin sitting behind some pages! Phew - I was so glad that little sucker turned up! And now it is in my hot little hands. It is a beautiful 1906 PF65 RB Cameo Indian cent. Here are some photos that I took with my Dino-Lite. The coin is really stunning with beautiful mirrors and color that do not show up in these photos.

Any way, Chris sure seemed to stay cool and didn't even show the anxiety he must have been feeling, but when we found the coin, I could see the relief on his face, as I'm sure he saw it on mine!

  • Thanks again charmy image

I do hope I packed those coins okay. I was very glad when we did find that little bugger. I had no idea you went to security, I did hear a few stories while at the show about some things getting stolen. Thanks again for running around the floor and tracking down the guy who we thought may have packed it on accident. I bet he was suprised when you asked if he had it image Are you going to be in houston by any chance?

It is true that stories like these do make our shows a bit entertaining now and then!

Chris, no, I'm taking most of December off! After three back to back shows (SF Mint, Baltimore, and Santa Clara this week), I will only be home 5 days in 3 weeks (though my husband sure likes his alone time, I think even he would rather have a little more frequent companionship!). Then come January, I'm off and running again with a coin show almost every weekend!

I hear that Houston Money show is a pretty good one and know a lot of dealers who will be there, so if you're going, let me know how you do. Hopefully, I'll see you in January at the FUN show.

  • Charmy,

I will be off and running the first of the year as well. I will see you at fun and then its off to all the other shows. Hope to get some more copper from you when we are both not in such a hurry.
  • Wow, glad that one turned out good. What a cliff hanger.
