Coin show newp - medal

I purchased this medal at the monthly Buffalo Numismatic Association show today. I realize it may be of local interest only, but the mintage of this medal is one in copper. These were minted in other metals, but according to club research only this one in copper.

  • S. M. Mosher was Stuart Mosher (1904-1956) and he was very well known (inducted into the Numismatic Hall of Fame - ANA in 1972). He is also remembered for, "United States Commemorative Coins - 1892 - 1939" published by Wayte Raymond. This softbound book contains 52 pages and has numerous black and white photos. No information about the holders but this is one of the earliest references for commemorative coins available today.

According to Heritage, Stuart Mosher, who was in charge of the coin collections in the Smithsonian Institution, elaborated on (Farran) Zerbe's 1921-S Morgan proof involvement in an article he published in the July 1955 The Numismatist. Mosher said that Zerbe was in California in 1921 awaiting the arrival of the dies that were to be used to strike the first Peace dollars that he had designed. The dies that did arrive turned out to be those for the old Morgan design that had not been coined since 1904. The story goes that Zerbe told the chagrined Mint officials that they could mollify his disappointment 'if they would strike off a few Morgan dollars from the new 1921 dies in proof condition. They were happy to oblige and manufactured about two dozen which he bought and later handed out to his various coin collecting friends.'

Stuart Mosher, in The Numismatist, July 1955, recalled he had seen at least two Philadelphia 1895 business strikes in uncirculated condition some time in the 1930's. Since impaired Proofs are known, conclusive evidence of a business strike would involve one in a condition high enough to allow examination of its original surfaces, perhaps AU or better. John Jay Ford claims to have inspected one such coin.

    Great piece of Numismatic history!

Very cool! With its provenance, this medal should have some appeal to collectors of the Red Book --- Mosher was among the 14 contributors listed in the 1st edition, back in 1946.

Abe Kosoff, Farran Zerbe, Aubrey Bebee, and other hobby legends rounded out that short list.
