Rare proof 1953 farthing for anyone needing one

Hi folks,

Here's a tip for anyone looking for the 2+A version of the farthing - check this out. It doesn't look like the nicest example, but it's cheap at the moment. They catalogue over $100 for nice ones.

I don't know that there's much of a market for them. I have a proof set containing one for sale off and on for years without so much as a nibble.

Probably true at the $100 level, but at $3-$5 or thereabouts, I would think there is. IMO the Brit catalogues overrate it.

  • I am the winner of this auction; very hard to find, and yeah, I'm not nuts about the spotting, but this is only the 2nd one of these I have ever seen. I will take my time trying to move this, but it will eventually find a home....Ed
  • I used to religiously look these out on ebay and rescue them from the US for $2-3 and put them back on to get £30-40. I've had half a dozen or so but lost interest.

Freeman obverse and reverse. Obverse 1 cross to border bead, obverse 2 cross to space, reverse 1 the I of FARTHING to space, on reverse 2 it points to a bead. The reference is The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain by MJ Freeman. First published 1970, second edition 1985. The 2006 reprint merely updated the prices in the back, which was a pointless exercise as it immediately became outdated. Further varieties have been identified subsequent to 1985, but it is still a comprehensive reference.
  • There are two reverses A I of farthing to gap and B I of farthing to bead. Two observes 1 + bead and 2 +to gap. The currency piece come in all four combinations 1+A, 1+B, 2+A and 2+B. 2+A being the scarces. Proof issues only come in two combinations. 2+A and 2+B. 2+A is rated by Freeman as rarity R9 7,000-12,000.

Further varieties have been identified subsequent to 1985, but it is still a comprehensive reference.
    Rob P please enlighten.

That was a general further varieties with regards to Freeman as a tome as opposed to varieties of farthing specific to 1953. I'm not aware of any other varieties for 1953 for any other denomination either.
