1916-D Mercury Upgrade?

What are the odds of this 1916-D Mercury in a NGC G-4 slab upgrading to G-6 at PCGS? image

eBay 1916-D Merc NGC G4

This was posted on another coin forum and I'd like your opinion. It does look like a G-4 that deserves a CAC bean.

Thanks!

I think it has a very good shot at it. Never mind the green bean!

it may depend on the third side... You never know what is lurking on the rim.

Looks nice but the upper obverse rim may keep it from the next higher grade.

Hmm. Looks straight-up G4 to me, but then again, it does have pretty strong rims. I suppose it might have a shot at 6.

Based on the images, I would say an easy G-6, but I agree with Fairlaneman's comment. There could be other problems hidden in the holder.

No chance if submitted in the NGC holder.

There is some chance if submitted raw.

Obverse is a no problem Good 6-VG8.
Reverse has"America" fading into the rim.
That could keep it out of a PCGS Good-6...IMO, who knows.
    Nice looking coin though.

Too bad about that, but it should bring strong $.

At this point of wear it is a real liner between a 4 and a 6.
I bet this one would get both grades if submitted a few times, raw of course.
It should value about the same to a collector with a good eye in either slab.

conservative grading is so refreshing. let the collectors hammer out
the price while the TPGs give the minimum grade the coin deserves
    based on their expertise.

JRocco , has it exactly right I think. Its a g6 most of the time though in my opinion.
  • For once, an EBay seller claiming "conservative grading" is not merely making a completely self-serving comment.

I agree with this seller that the grade is pretty conservative, and can easily imagine this one getting a G-6. I think that would be most accurate, though it's really more like a G-5.5.

they tend to be more conservative when big price junps occur from grade to grade.

But we all know that if it does not make the 6, the grade automatically falls down to a 4.

i think there has been many periods of time when tpgs were gladly
giving out the higher grade though... and by periods of time i am talking
multi year stretches based on what i see in some holders through
    the generations of slabs.

Yup. And therein, exactly, lies the rub!

I would like to see the coin in hand. There appears to be a problem on the obverse rim between the E and R of LIBERTY.

Looks like a little schmutz (dirt) or maybe some album-induced rim toning. Doesn't look like a problem to me in the sense of mechanical or chemical surface damage.

Yeah and it's a decent buy at $950 too. It would look so NICE in a PCGS G6 slab!

A year ago she likely would have gotten a 6 from either. There seem to be loads of AG3's slabbed in 4 holders etc. Seems like the key is moving toward proper grading...

You had better bust it out cause if you send it in to pcgs in its current white dress it won't get the good-06 -- on the other hand if you go out into your gargage and bust it out with a hammer and send it in naked it should go a 6. buffnixx
