Are there US Customs duties on coins???

mbogomanmbogoman Posts: 5,212 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am in the middle of purchasing a Double Eagle from a seller in Canada. Does the US Customs assess duties on coins purchased outside the country? Does anyone know anything about this? I suppose I should have checked beforehand, but seller has perfect feedback and has sold to many in the US, the issue never even crossed my mind...

TIA,

  • I've never paid any duties for coins out of Canada, and I've bought quite a few.

I do know that there is duty on non Canadian coins going to Canada. But, I don't
believe that there is duty coming here.

There used to be an import duty on items with a declared value of $400 and up. Don't know if that still applies.

If only the U.S. Customs Dept. had a website, with answers to frequently asked questions...

    Oh- wait...

Gold coins, medals, and bullion may be brought into the U.S. However, under regulations administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, such items originating in or brought from, Cuba, Iran, and Sudan* are prohibited entry.

Copies of gold coins are prohibited if not properly marked by the country of issuance. The importation of counterfeit coins is prohibited.

There is no duty on gold coins, medals or bullion, however, if the value of the gold coins is over $10,000, it must be declared to a CBP officer and must be reported on the FinCEN 105 form.
  • I remember, years ago, there was a customs charge for proof coins, but not unc sets.
