Mantle/Maris cards in Life Magazine circa 1962

I have a friend who is contemplating buying a life magazine from 1962 that contains two cards of Mantle and Maris. I have not seen the item and I do not know much about what cards these are. Does anyone know of any value for this and is it rare.

    Hi Mark,

The complete magazine, with the attached panel containing both cards, in mid-grade condition, usually sells anywhere from $60-$100.

A complete panel in PSA 8 or higher could very well top the $1,000 price! (the highest grade to date, I believe, is a PSA 6!)

An individual PSA 10 Mantle ad-back, which there are none of currently, could fetch close to $2,000.

Finding the magazine in Gem Mint condition with either or both cards in PSA 9 or 10 is an extreme scarcity.

  • I recently separated the two cards from a magazine. I had the Maris Graded by Beckett and it received a Bvg 7.5 Near mint+ the mantle I kept raw because of the staple damage. The magazine I have is so beat up it probably needs to be chunked. I paid around $65 on ebay around two years ago. This card was in my recent Beckett submission. I haven't researched what the maris or mantle sell for in graded in higher grades.... anybody care to provide recent completed ebay listings or Vcp research it would be highly appreciated! Thanks

I'm confused John is saying it really is one card, (front is Mantle back is Maris) Or whatever.

Yet Stallion appears to be saying he got one graded and one he did not due to a staple.

    Can someone explain?

    Good for you.
  • the card is offset so if you cut in half you would have 2 cards marris is on the edge and mantle is on the inside,,bj

  • Wow! after looking at your cards they are in blazer shape compared to mine.. My maris had ink smudge on the card but still received a fairly better grade. As mentioned above the highest panel grade is only a psa 6 ex-mint . What is the condition of the magazine? After looking at the Maris card on the bottom right edge is that a print smudge or a ding?

Thanks for the clarification, so basically a person could make 2 complete cards out of one.

    Thanks again.

    Hi guys,

I recently picked this one up for $25. I don't really know anything about these but just liked it. I can't find a stain anywhere and since it was in a magazine there is no wax. Anybody know what this would be worth without the qualifier?? I would love to have the Mantle to match this one. Cool stuff!

    Hi Jeff,

the PSA 9(ST) Maris (ad-back) is comparable in price to a PSA 7 which goes for around $20-$30. So, basically you paid the going price for that card.

A matching PSA 7 Mantle (ad-back) usually goes for around $65-75.

Could the stain be on the back?

If you can't find a stain maybe a review is in order?

    Just FYI:

There are three grading options for each of these cards:

    1) Complete Panel - which contains both cards unperforated
    2) Perforated - cards are individually separated at perforations
    3) Hand-Cut - cards are cut around the black border lines

  • My wife bought me a copy of the mag w/cards about three years ago for $100+ and then I ended up finding one at an antique show that same year for $8 !! Whenever we see Life mags we flip through looking for another copy.

It is hard to imagine how the cards would get stained stuck in the middle of a magazine -- unless a careless reader spilled something...

Thanks for the info. My uncle was offered the mag for $150 which seems a bit high after seeing these on ebay. Thanks for the info!!
  • I paid $100 for mine. I've seen them on ebay for much cheaper than that. I tried selling mine about a month ago for that price and couldn't get it. I decided to keep it and make it a centerpiece in my collection.

Not Rare, actually the most common by far of all the Post/Jello cards.....

I used to find them about 4-6 times a year (for under $10) just glancing through the magazines in antique stores in the 80's. Most of these (deals) have dried up.

I can spot that issue from across the room, but about 1/2 dont have the cards attached anymore.

Finding a Mantle w/o the normal left border crease (where it was slid between the pages) is very tough.

  • I found out about these when I was in grade school back in the early 80's. My parents were antique dealers so we would always be attending either shows, auctions or garage sales. At one time I had over 40 of these with the cards in them. The last 10 years or so I have sold a number of them on ebay or at shows so I am probably down to around 10. The price has steadily declined on them as more and more pop up on ebay. One of my favorite collectibles as a kid.
