Care to grade a couple morgan reverses? obverse and grade added

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,931 ✭✭✭✭✭
Picked these up today. The reverses don't match the obverse quite right. What are you thoughts on these 2 reverses? I will add the obverses later.

A: This one is very clean.

B. Amazing mirrors.....

Edit: I know the reverse doesn't seem to carry the weight of the obverse. I was just a little amazed how clean these reverse were, coin a even more. So here are the obverses.

A. Ouch!! Some good hits one this one. Coin is graded a 1898-O 64PL Amazing contrast of the marks from one side to the other. Nothing on reverse, plenty on obverse

B. 1879-S PCGS 65. I have full DMPL 1879-S's, obverse DMPL and now a reverse DMPL. This coin has great reverse depth to the mirror. The obverse has no mirrors at all. Overall looks very nice for a 65. It is also in a OGH. and since 79-s is probably my favorite year I like the coin.

Those are some pretty fantastic reverses. The second looks to have some serious die polish lines.

I thought I would try and see if I can determine the date of each coin

I will suggest the first is an 1898-O and the second is either an 1879-s or an 1882-s

    Top 67
    Bottom 66PL?

That top one is really nice with only a few tics by AMERICA

Nice and I'm sure the obverses are a bit more scruffy, right?

Oh, yeah, love the tail feather doubling too on the top one!

I've seen many near perfect (ms66/67) reverses on ms63 and ms64 graded coins.

I don't think reverses count for much when they're grading Morgans.

    I'd call the top coin's reverse a 66PL, and the bottom one a 65PL.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Reverse A) PCGS MS-66 PL
Reverse B) PCGS MS-66 PL (possible DMPL)

    Yep-- Coinkat called it first.

Well, I don't like them the same myself. The 2nd coin has a lot of small nicks and dings, especially around "States" and on the eagle and wreath. I'd say the first coin is a 66 (possible PL) and the 2nd a weak 65 and PL (maybe DMPL). That's how I see them anyway.

  • I must be seeing a different picture. The reverse of that first coin is nearly flawless. I give it a 67.

Nice clean reverses and I like the die polish markings on the S Mint.

  • The 98 has too many hits for a 64. Did it get upgraded due to its superb reverse?
  • DennisHDennisH Posts: 13,996 ✭✭✭✭✭
My guess is the marks only look too numerous because the photos are so big and clear; I suspect that in hand it looks like a 64 all day long.
    When in doubt, don't.
