Brandon Spikes' so-called penalty

...shows an abject lack of character in the Florida program. No matter how you slice it, that's pathetic.

hey its a half of football against vandy!!!

i bet he doesn't play the 2nd half either, 1. because they won't need him and if they do they are in trouble. 2. meyer is hearing this from a lot of people that the penalty isn't enough, so he can sit him teh 2nd half and say he held him out for a full game.

i agree this is laughable, it was an intentional act going for someone's eyes really one of the only places not protected on a football player. i fear if they were actually playing someone good he would not have been suspended at all, instead taken care of internally.

why doesn't the SEC have a say in this?

I saw the clip and couldn't believe that warranted only half of a game. It's almost as if Urban babes condones that type of activity.

Meyer dropped the hammer, what more do you want? the kid is gone for two full quarters! I wonder if Spikes cried after he heard the bad news?

Meyer would have done nothing without some media intensity. I don't believe for a second he would have suspended him for the Alabama game. And I love Tebow's explanation that they didn't do anything the other team was already doing. I thought he was a super Christian?? I guess its turn the other check and gauge out the eyeballs at the same time for him.

The SEC does have a say in this. They have supported Urban Meyer's punishment of a 1 half suspension. Thats the real travesty. It feeds the conspiracy theory that the SEC protects it undefeated teams each year. This incident + officiating in the Florida/Arkansas game that gave the game to Florida + officiating in Georgia/LSU game that gave the game to LSU = BIG credibility problem for the SEC. I'm a huge SEC fan and have always supported the conferences' integrity.....until the Brandon Spikes incident and the SEC's failure to control the situation.

I should have worded it differently such as "Why doesn't the SEC step in and grow a set".

You've answered the question either way. lol
  • Alright ladies calm down...seems everyone is shocked, just SHOCKED I tell ya, that dirty things go on at the bottom of the pile. Not to defend Spikes dirty actions, but this type of thing goes on at the bottom of piles in every big game...Tennis it ain't. He's out for a game - what more do you want, him to be drawn & quartered? Jeez...I read one blog where the author compared Spike's eye-gauging to child molestation, talk about losing all semblance of perspective.

And while I fully concede two wrongs don't make a right, you all do recall earlier in the game when Tebow emerged from the bottom of a pile holding his eye & had to go to the sidelines to pour water in it & rub it right? Oh what's that, you don't remember? Probably because ESPN or wherever isn't playing that clip every.single.hour.of.every.single.day.

And as far as Tebow's Christian values, I don't look at any explanation he made as anything other than that: an explanation. And if it's turning the other cheek you want, how about the super late hit on him that didn't even draw a flag. Oh wait, you're not gonna see that on SportsCenter either so
    here it is.

I don't see Tebow whining & crying about that. It's true Urban has asked the SEC to look into it, but that only came after the dust-up about the Spikes play. And to give credit where credit is due, the Georgia player Washaun Ealy doesn't think Spike should be suspended. Bottom line, it's football and sometimes it gets dirty. Spikes made a mistake, he'll pay the price. If this upsets your delicate sensibilities then turn off the TV and go tend to your flower garden.

    Damn.

I don't see where anyone in this thread said or even implied they were shocked at the eye-gouging or that dirty plays happen... The problem is that neither the team nor the conference is imposing any real penalty for it. And while I don't think that getting the weekend off is a suitable sanction (and isn't funny that Spikes' had to be the one to request the upgrade from just a half?), there's probably a more appropriate punitive measure somewhere between that and dismemberment that could be imposed if anyone at Florida or in the SEC had their priorities straight.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to water my mums.

thank goodness a real man stepped in to tell us how it is and how we should think about it. I bet your reaction would not have been the same if Spikes would have caused blindness or a serious eye injury to the guy. It was uncalled for and unprofessional, this is not the type of person I want to be called an All-American, PERIOD.

You dont see Tebow whining and crying about things because your seeing it through the eyes of a fan. He whines and moans all the time and during the game, he is worse than Jay Cutler.

If the guy truly was a christian valued man he would of stated it was wrong to eye gouge a defenseless player. He tried to reason why it was ok, not very christian like IMO. His excuse is a slippery slope argument that would lead to its ok to kill babies as long as the other team is doing it too.

Also you are infering that Tebow got eye gouged, or he could have gotten dirt in his eye or about 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 other things. We know Spikes eye gouged because we can freakin see it.

The other players wishes are of no concern in this matter. How many battered wifes don't want to prosecute their mates? The law or the SEC should have imposed a harsh penalty at once and not let this become a comedy of errors ending up with the player himself doing the punishing.

BTW aren't you also a Steelers fan?? What let me guess in soccer you like Man U and are a big Red Wings fan as well?

  • It just works me up to see this one incident get so much play in the press...I bet last weekend alone there was at least a handful on dirty plays on the bottom of piles, but because Florida's #1 the media just rides it to no end.

drewsef I'm not trying to come off as a "real man" or "internet tough guy" the whole situation just bothers me, and in my original post I do say it was dirty.

Morgoth you must have me confused with someone else, I'm not a Steelers fan (nothing against them, just not a fan) & I don't watch Hockey or Soccer at all. And while I've never hid the fact I am a fan and accept there is a bias that goes along with that, I've NEVER seen Tebow whine & complain....we are talking about the same Tebow right? The only thing he's ever done that has even a whiff of that is when he blew of the press conference after the Miss game 2 weeks back. Look at your post...you're referencing killing babies & wife beating in comparison to a play in a football game. C'mon...

I've heard this excuse OVER and OVER and OVER from other Gators fans this week. Its the old "c'mon everybody does it, stop picking on us" BS. Pls go find all your youtube videos of other teams gouging out the eyes of your beloved Florida Gators and post them here. I don't care to see late hits on Tebow either. Late hits and eye gouging are not comparable. Stop the excuses. Why can't you just admit that 1 player on the team, Spikes, has serious character issues and just let this issue die?

Wouldn't it be ironic if he had spiked the player with his shoes or something? Then Spikes would have gotten spiked with a suspension for spiking! image
