1860 GB Penny Question For Nerds, Trivia

OK, on the 1860 penny are the LCW initials on the "D" reverse incuse or raised?

Can anybody post good quality pictures of the D and E reverses (well better than the illustrations in Freeman anyway)?

The D reverse has LCW incuse. My example doesn't have it well struck though, so you have to rotate the coin to get the light from the right angle to be certain.

This is about as good as I can scan.

Thanks Rob. If I can figure out in this century how to post pictures I will post mine which looks to be a Obv2 RevD, very very prooflike (maybe proof). Freeman does not state specifically until Rev E description that LCW is incuse. That little helmet feather can be a giveaway to the later type.

  • The LCW on reverse D is often poorly struck and only partially visible. The E reverse is quite scarce..One difference between D and E not listed in Freeman is the missing front sail on the ship on the E reverse.

All details including the LCW incredibly sharp with mild cameo and reflective fields and sharp edge. Part of my currency date set just tossed in as an ordinary 1860 penny and not even marked for purchase price or date (ebay I think). I guess I kind of rebelled at all of the trivial varieties and should have looked at it a bit more, and thought it a bit crazy when some of the recent sales would have 20 or 25 1860 or 1861 pennies. Thanks, muyg!

LOL.. Good call... I see that I'm not the only one that is aware of that little tidbit...

RBC - nice pics, there. I also seem to see Brit's thumb to cross further over the inner circumferential line about the shield on E, though your D rev seems to have a bit wider rim to the shield than Freeman or my coin, with the morterlines between the bricks of the LH being a bit more prominent.

I really like these type of discussions on the board and think them quite entertaining and useful so thank all for their input.
