Why do I have such a hard time taking pics of copper coins

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am ok at taking pictures of silver coins, but I am usually terrible at copper. I use the same settings and flash, but the copper coins usually
come out looking horrible. I just picked this copper up from forum member hyperion. The coin is a amazing, but I have a hard time taking good pics of it.

In hand the coin would look more like a combination of the 2 sets of pics, not quite as red as the first or dark as the second

What he said but I agre, copper is a bear to shoot, pardon the expression.

  • I like the first as well, but the second is not bad. you really brought out the scratches on the surface of the slab but the coin still looks good.image

I also have issues with copper and so far am using OTT and Halogen lighting... I want to try regular light bulbs - GE Reveals.

I'm kinda happy with these just wish I'd buffed the slab scuffs out prior to photographing it. image

I leave copper pics to the professionals. I took Jeremy Katz(airplanenut) up on his offer to photo some Indian Head Cents and here are some of the results. Fantastic.
    Thank you, Jeremy.

Have you tried center metering the exposure so that you are getting light readings that are from the darker coin rather than the lighter slab?

    Great pics!

RB or BN copper in a slab is tough for me.

I'm surprised if you use a flash. I thought fixed lights were easier.
