REEDS....HOW MANY ON A PROOF ???

how many reeds are on morgan proofs and circulation strike? and is that the most obvious or only way to tell them apart, and what about other denominations of coins what is a tell tale sign to tell them apart?

  • yes that is a very nice proof....ut iam sure there are some dmpl's that are close to that, but how do you tell them apart? how do you tell a 1909 vdb, bs from a proof

    Counting reeds to determine a Morgan proof is pretty unusual. I only was forced to do it once, just to convince myself. The number of reeds can vary for each year, and some years the count is the same
    as business strikes.

    It's takes experience to tell proof from business strikes. There's no one thing, and your question could take pages to answer. Basically, it's the look of the coin, strike, surface, etc. Things like
    lint marks, bag marks, polishing in protected areas, and reed counts are not usually definitive but just add up to complete the picture. For Morgans a DMPL surface is much different than a proof surface.

    Different presses were used for proofs - a high pressure medal press.
