103 reeds on the edge of a quarter. Is it fake?

I counted 103 give or take a reed.

The date is 1896-O

Might the coin be fake?

Show us a picture of the obverse and reverse and we'll know for sure.

Depending on the grade, reeds sometimes wear off over time in circulation, so don't discount a coin's authenticity immediately based on reeding.

I will add some photos tonight thanks
  • The 1891-O Seated Quarter has 110 reeds, so it's possible it's okay, although this is quite wide spacing.
I don't know if anyone has done a study of edge reeding on Barber Quarters. Maybe this could be your new project.
The best way to count reeds is with the reflector taken from a flashlight.
Just lay the coin in and the reeding shows around the circumference.
Mark a spot where there is a scratch or something, and start counting.

  • The Quarter is genuine.
The spot by the D is a hit.
