Joe DiMaggio ......

I'm not from around here .
I'm a coin collector . I just ran across something of interest that I can't seem to
find much info on . My father inlaw brought over a photo album from a G.I. stationed in Hawaii
during WWII . This guy was in the paymaster division . He was well traveled thru the Islands .
This album contains over 500 pictures ! He put them all in order . Their are over 4 pages on Baseball .
Appx 10 pictures of Joe DiMaggio In his Air Force Uniform & Baseball Uniform . The rest have long
shots of actual playing . These are all personel photos , never seen or published before . There is
also 3 pages of Bob Hopes CSO show in Hilo . Does anyone know if the Joe DiMaggio photos have
any collector value ??
Thanks, Dan

Absolutely no value at all. Might as well box them up and send them to me for disposal.

You may want to contact several sports auction houses that can give you a free appraisal.
I do not have one to recommend over another, but Heritage, Christie's and Robert Edward Auctions are three that you could start with.
I believe that if they are unpublished, there may be collectors or historians who want them. I suggest not sending large scans (copies) to anyone.
If they ask for a sample, make it small with a watermark and cropped so they can not be copied.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me.
Hi and welcome you might want to ask Griffins about this, I'll get word to him.
Also there was no air force during WW2, there was however what they call Army air corp.
Another person to ask is cycleback.com
Good luck.

And yes, DiMaggio (and Bob Hope) vintage photographs have collector value.

If you need any help on technical aspects please feel free to pm me.
You could also self publish a book of them- it's very easy and very inexpensive.

Any chance he got the negatives when he got the photo album?
Also it seems like great advice not to email pictures. If you scan them then scan at the lowest resolution that you can, and keep the book complete as it adds provenance.
<< <i>If anybody knows henry yee or marshall fogel they might be able to offer some advice without actually grading them or having them in hand. Since grading photos is relatively new they might work something out for you to get them graded/slabbed/authenticated if that would add value.

Great advice, Jim!
Here's an interesting write-up from 2006 that discusses the advent of PSA/DNA Photo Authentication with the help of Messrs. Fogel and Lee. I know Henry Yee can be contacted via his ebay ID hyee_auctions; not sure about contacting Marshall.
"PSA/DNA Will Authenticate Photographs
- January 9, 2006
A new authentication service from PSA/DNA will help collectors and dealers make informed decisions about historic sports photographs.
(Newport Beach, California) -- The recent huge growth in collecting sports photographs has led to dramatic price increases, and also perplexing questions about the originality of some photos. To assist collectors and dealers, photograph authentication services soon will be offered by PSA/DNA, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
Two of the hobby's most respected experts, Marshall Fogel and Henry Yee, co-authors of the new book, "A Portrait of Baseball Photography" (Mastronet Vintage Guides, 2005), will assist PSA/DNA with the new services. Photos will be certified by PSA/DNA based on the innovative classification system created by Yee and Fogel.
"The popularity of old photographs is certainly increasing, but many collectors frankly don’t know exactly what they're buying. Is it a first generation photo made directly from the original negative soon after the picture was taken or was it developed from the negative decades later, or maybe it's a second generation reprint not directly from the original negative? These confusing factors all affect the value of the photo, and the new PSA/DNA photograph authentication services will help ensure buyers get what they pay for," explained Joe Orlando, PSA/DNA President.
Photos certified by PSA/DNA will be classified based on the Types I, II, III and IV classification system created by Fogel and Yee. The system is based on determination of the photograph’s originality or reproduction, development process and publication date.
"The acceptance of this new classification system already is a smash hit," said Fogel. "We wanted to build consensus among professional conservators while having a system that is easy for collectors to understand. And that's the key: this will help collectors and dealers understand what they have."
A detailed explanation of the classification system is contained in the new book co-authored by Fogel and Yee, and will be available online when PSA/DNA formally launches its photograph authentication service in a few weeks.
"The market for vintage photographs has exploded the last ten years. But there is a great lack of knowledge among many collectors and even dealers about what is an original image and what is a later reproduction," said Yee.
"The photography field's traditional use of the phrases, 'first generation' and 'second generation,' is not adequate for today's marketplace. You also have to take into consideration the factors of when the print was made, so that's why we developed the categories of Types I, II, III and IV."
Denver, Colorado attorney, Marshall Fogel, is widely known for assembling one of the most significant collections of baseball memorabilia and baseball photographs. He is a former Deputy District Attorney and the author of many feature articles about sports collectibles.
Henry Yee of Jersey City, New Jersey is a Wall Street business systems management and information technology consultant. He also is a collector and dealer who has handled over a million news photographs from public and private archives.

I'm now trying to name some of the other people with Joe . Alot of shots have him standing
around with the same buddies , and one shows six guys with the one on the end holding
a baseball with a pen ( must be a ball player ). Other shots show Joe bending over signing
baseballs .
Thanks Again , Dan
Definitely some value there!
