1954 Bowman variation confirmed

image

We've finally confirmed a recently reported variation of 1954 Bowman card #10, Carl Erskine, on which a pair of seemingly stray black loops in the sky at upper-left are actually carry-overs from the facsimile autograph of the card that appeared above it on the print sheet.

Interesting. Do you have background on how this could happen on some sheets as opposed to others? Also, why would the white border not be written over?

VitoCo, as explained in the original Sept. 24 blog post, it is my supposition that the facsimile autographs on 1954 Bowmans are the only black ink that was actually used. That would explain the "pastel" look of the cards. How the white border came to cover up some of that black ink is beyonf me. I do know there is are some 1954 Bowman printer's plates in the hobby; it would be interesting to study them in this light.

I seem to recall this variation being shown in magazine articles a number of years ago.
