88 Down--1962 Topps Civil War News Completed in PSA or Better

My 14th non-sport set and 88th completed overall with each card graded psa 8 or better is one of my favorites and one I have been working on for some time--1962 Topps Civil War News.

I bought this set raw complete and in nrmt-mt condition about 15 years ago and sent it in for grading about 3 years ago. While every card is super sharp, the set is notorious for its centering issues and I had to upgrade about 25 of the cards which were not centered well enough to meet the standards for a psa 8 grade.

I became interested in the set as I was a History major in college with a specialty in American History. I have seen Ken Burns entire series on the Civil War and have read several books on the topic. Helpful to me in completing the set is collector and all-around good guy Frank Evanov who is still number 2 on the all time set rating with 9.00. Carl Riegger who along with Frank has been to my home has the top set with a 9.36 rating. I think I contributed 1 card to Carl's set. One time after Frank sold(or gave) me some of these cards he said he wanted me to give one of my low pop 9s to Carl. I did it immediately. Frank likes nothing better than to help others with their sets.

I would consider the set to be one of the most popular post-war non-sports sets. While the cards are by no means rare, because of its popularity and issues were centering the lower pops can be very tough.

For the last 4 cards I got which are the 4 lowest pops in the set I paid $400-$500 per card for. All are between pop 20 and pop 27.

7 Death At Sea
80City in Flames
8 Destructive Blow
25Hanging the Spy

My set is now complete at 72 psa 8s and 19 psa 9s and ranks 13th on the registry with a 8.18 set rating. I will let it rest at this level.

My goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in psa 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goal.

Jim , I had quite a few of these when I was much younger. I never bought any , but traded for some , with someone who had them. Probably tossed them , when Batman or some other set came out . I still see them , now and then .

Congrats , AGAIN , on your finishing this set. T- 12 to go.

    Thanks Sonny,

I don't recall seeing them when I was growing up either although I was so consumed by baseball and football that year I could have missed them. Its an interesting set and very challenging because of its popularity to put together in psa 8 or better.

Jim, What happens when you complete set 100? I certainly hope 100 doesnt mean that you're done buying cards.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

    Perkdog,

No I wouldn't. Saying that, I can't think of a baseball, football or basketball set I don't love.

I would pass and have passed, however, on non-sports sets I am not fond of.

    Matt,

What happens when I hit set #100? I start thinking about 101. No reason to stop at 100--it just seemed like a reasonable goal that I set a few years ago. I have a lot more sets I would like to complete in psa 8 or better.

    Matthew,

You should give it a shot--its a popular and very interesting set.

Good for you Jim! Personally for me there are very BB/FB few sets I dont like as well, as far as Non-Sports go I think some of the best artwork have been put into a bunch of these sets one of them being the Civil War News. Good luck in your pursuit!

    Fandango,

Yes--I have the set. I was confused as I have 1939 Carreras-Glamour Girls Stage & Films completely graded. I have 3 cards graded in 1939 Carreras-Film & Stage Beauties with the rest ungraded.

I bought about 15-20 1930s Movie Star sets with 2-3 cards graded per set and have been sending them in a couple sets at a time to be graded. Will send Film & Stage Beauties in with next lot.

    Softparade,

Thanks--it is one of my favorite non-sports sets as well.

    Kevin,

    Thanks -appreciate the kind words.

    Nathaniel,

I don't know but I would presume that they would.

    Donato,

    Thank you--much appreciated.

    JamesGotPoorMan,

What next? I never know because I have a lot of sets within a couple of cards of completion or I could decide to go forward on certain non-sports complete sets psa 8 or better that I have been offered.

Most likely in my opinion is 1960 Leaf Baseball where I need just one upgrade from a psa 7 to complete the set in psa 8 or better(Donovan) and one of my good dealer friends just sent an sgc 96 to psa to cross it over. Assuming this works, this would be 89.
