Pulled out the Barry Halper Collection catalog again last night

I hadn't looked at it in quite some time. I was looking for nice pictures of early jerseys and I was not disappointed. And the quality of his card collection was amazing as well. All I could think of when I saw the estimates on the cards was that I really wanted a time machine to go back and pick some of them up. I spent probably an hour looking through the vintage portion last night and this morning and made it through about 1/3 of the first book. LOL I forgot how much great stuff he had! Those books are like entering another world. Just amazing!

Amazing man, amazing collection!
Whenever Mr. Harper's name is mentioned, it makes me think about a particular piece of memorabilia that he owned. It was a questionnaire filled out by Jackie Robinson when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers' Montreal farm team for the 1946 season, breaking the color barrier. In that document, Robinson listed his ambition in baseball: "To open doors for Negroes in Organized Ball."
Something that I always found interesting about Barry was the fact that, the item he cherished the most, out of all his entire prestigious collection, was a glove bearing Mickey Mantle's name that hung from a peg in his home office. The Sotheby's auction catalogue listed a glove worn by Mantle "circa 1960" for an anticipated bid of $10,000 to $20,000. When Barry was asked what was that homebound glove worth?, he simply replied "nothing, it's my glove. It just happens to be a Mantle model. But it's from the days I played softball."
The hobby lost a great man in 2005.
Thanks for the thread, Chris. It brought back fond memories.

As far as Cards, take a look at the Copland Collection catalog from 1991 (Copland Sports owner's card collection sold at Sotheby's 18 years ago). Its another great book for reference now. It actually sells on Amazon for $35 and it was a free catalog. You can find them cheaper on eBay from time to time. That card collection was incredible!
PS. I like especially because all the cards are RAW!

I hadn't heard of that one before. I'll have to add it to my collection one of these days. Does anyone here have a copy available?
