Onterrio Smith Arrested Again

From the Sacramento Bee -

Former Grant High star arrested in Truckee

Onterrio Smith, a former Grant High School football star whose National Football League career was derailed by off-field issues, was jailed overnight by Nevada County Sheriff's Office on a drug charge warrant.

According to the Truckee Police Department, Smith, 28, was a passenger in a Pontiac GT that was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 80 in Truckee at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday

The driver, John Payne-Johnson Sr., was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, Truckee police Capt. Randy Fenn confirmed to The Bee today. Smith was arrested after a routine check revealed that he had an outstanding warrant from Sacramento for possession of a controlled substance. Smith was booked at 12:26 a.m., Penn said, and bail was set at $15,000.

Smith set regional and Northern California rushing records in 1998 at Grant in becoming the most heavily recruited player in the program's storied history. Smith has admitted in Bee stories in recent years, including last December, that his football career had rough stretches due to his own mistakes.

Who in the heck makes up names like "Onterrio" and gives it to your child?

I wonder if one checks either a book of baby names or an online version of same whether "Onterrio" would be listed?

50 years ago, heck even 25-30 years ago I doubt that there was anyone in the USA with the name "Onterrio" Today there are probably hundreds of people with that name.

  • "Onterrio Raymond Lloyd Smith (born December 8, 1980 in Sacramento, California)"

Perhaps it's related to Ontario, California but a different spelling.

BTW, just realized that he and I share the same birthday.

Thanks for helping me discover that!

According to the Social Security Administration, it is not in the top 1000 most popular names for any of the last 50 years.

As a Broncos fan, I'd figure you'd be more openminded about exotic names with a starting back named Knowshon Moreno in your backfield..

Athletes, actors, musicians, and others who are or who hope to be in the public spotlight quite often have given, or adopted, names which most people would never consider using and probably would never think of.

Consider Frank Zappa naming his kids Dweezle and Moon Unit. Lloyd B. Free of the 1970's and early 1980's Philadephia 76ers changed his name to World B. Free.

I have no objection to anyone using any name they want to. It just makes me scratch my head at some of the names people think up and use. Deep down, I think those who have unusual names have them given to them by their parents or take them on later in life simply as a way to darw attention to themselves.
