As i have several complete sets that will be coming back from PSA, i decided to test the waters with my #1 PSA 1925 Rothman Cinema Stars Set for Memory's Winter auction...
I'm waiting on the 1923 EDWARDS, RINGER, AND BIGG Cinema Stars and the 1924 SANDORIDES Cinema Stars (Large Big Gun Variation Set), 1934 Garbaty's( U.S. Stars),1936 Godfrey Phillips stars of the screen--perforated.
I beg to differ with you... infact, i have made all my money back selling the lower grade cards from multiple sets i purchased, including the fees to PSA for grading for the high end cards i submitted. That set is 100% pure profit. Show me this plethora warehouse. There is only 1 company in London that appears to a have a corner on this market. And if you want those sets...your gonna pay!! I have movie star sets that (to my knowledge of 10 plus years on ebay) have never been sold on ebay. I have yet to grade those sets. I recently sold a couple of PSA 10 1934 GARBARTY cards for over $50 each on ebay without too much of problem. Sold my retired graded Ardath Set privately to a board member here for $350...can't be all bad//
I will agree with you though on their storing habits of these sets--- sucks. And so does their shipping methods.
"Almost all high grade UK sets are barely worth grading and have an exceedingly small following with US collectors"---apparently you haven't followed my ebay sales for the last couple of years//
<< <i>To each their own. If you have the time to fool around spending hours and hours making $500 or $1,000, then I would agree you are doing well.
Also, all the UK junk waters down the searches. One day, hopefully eBay makes 1/2 of the tobacco listings go into a foreign category...PLEASE!!! >>
Good Day, And I will admit I have tried that myself with very mixed results, Had a lot of Real misses, some semi hits (Does J Wix Henry come to mind, Thought I was retiring to Tahiti when I got a large lot of MINT 9's and the only GEM 10, came down to earth and sold most of the 9's for $30-40 each as a lot, which was still good, still have the GEM 10)
Lots of other experiments of grading a few from a set, and after sitting in store for a year, then sold for $5-6 bucks regardless of grade, and happy to get my grading fee mostly back.

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
The overproduction, plethora of warehoused cards and refined collecting (storing) habits of the British = bad news
Does the refined collecting (storing) habits of the British mean that they were taking care of the cards from the early 1900's? What I mean is they were not getting tossed into shoeboxes or used to play flips or closest to the wall games?? thanks for your question answering consideration. al.
Like there was wasn't a plethora of Topps Baseball cards??= bad news?? Archinator is mis-informed. If this was the case, ebay would be flooded with these movie star sets. They aren't. And what is out there, usually the quality is very poor as the "euro's" do not know how to store cards and have not changed from their old ways. So to get high graded cards is extremely difficult and not a dime a dozen as Arch would leave you to believe. Ask the guys who own these sets on the registry.
Why don't you look at the pop report and tell me how many of these exist if it's so easy....
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Arch I think you are being a little harsh, the url you sent me to was a raw german lot with most stars European and the backs written in German. Carew is selling a set of cards with names many know and appreciate and his set is graded and most probably has a few people with registry sets already.
I was buying the UK sets a few years ago, (cheap) most came in very good shape, 7 and above so the Brits did in fact treat them well.
I think the true answer lies somewhere between what you have said and what Carew has shown.
Carew that auction did better than I expected, congrats!

I think the only thing is that the following (demand) is not there. They certainly look nice and appear to be clear. But having 5 people bid for domething is a lot different than having 55 people bid on it. Then again, ons of those five "has just got to have it". Hell I don't know...

It's all about supply and demand! Throw in the age of these cards and condition, it makes it all that much easier for someone to pay for a LEGITIMATE set at a premium. Congrats on your sale of a very nice set!

Hi Carew29 ,
Congrats on your sale . Not a bad price considering it's a $60 set in it's raw form .
The power of grading and the registry .
Well Done .

Mark
All you really need is 2 people that have to have it.
5 or 55 really does not matter.
