So how am I supposed to handle insurance on shipping Ebay items?

I'm thoroughly confused with it.

Help me out, what should I charge for shipping on the following items:

Less than $50 item

$50-200 item

$200-500 item.

$500 items and up.

Thanks in advance.

Do you ship USPS? then why not charge actual cost....use their table. Brilliant!

When selling items over a grand it may be wiser (and cheaper) to ship via registered mail.

I believe you can no longer charge for insurance on ebay. At least on an a la carte basis. You can only specify a shipping and handling charge. You can build it into there, but it will effect you listing's standings in ebay's eyes. Your listing will show at the end of searches etc. if the shipping is too high.

Just send with DC or Sig Con normally, and only insure when you feel that you are at risk. Dc and Sig Con are Ok for Paypal and insurance is for YOU, not your buyer. It covers your tail for the PO's possible issues. You can always use UPS etc. their insurance is much cheaper, but alot more necessary IMO. Plus the charges for the package in general are much higher.

Any costs you incurr for insurance services must be funded
by the proceeds of your sales, OR must be burried in the
gross fee you collect for shipping.

    ...............

    USPS Domestic INS Rates

    $0.01 to $50 $1.75
    $50.01 to $100 $2.25
    $100.01 to $200 $2.75
    $200.01 to $300 $4.70
    $300.01 to $400 $5.70
    $400.01 to $500 $6.70
    $500.01 to $600 $7.70

Some sellers are pricing shipping differently, based on the estimated
sale price of EACH item. This is a little labor intensive, if you list lots of
    items.

    ........................

I have now caused to be removed all references to INS in my listings.

    Historically, I have always said:

"Fast Shipping Is Free and Includes Delivery Confirmation and USPS Insurance."

I was told by an EBAY-creature that such a statement "might" violate the new policy.

    Now, I state:

"Fast and Safe USPS Shipping Is Free."

    ..............

    Because I list only BINs, recovering the INS costs is not a problem;
items are simply priced to include ALL shipping costs.

Auction sellers - currently not in great favor by EBAY - cannot easily
do that. Super-high starting prices OR reserves are seen as a poor
    option by most sellers.

    ............

Based on LOTS of loss-data, self-INS is likely a good option.

Just take a buck from each sale - below a chosen strike price - and
put it in a jar. At the end of the year, you should have lots of money
    left.

High-dollar items should still be insured by USPS.

ALL items should bear Delivery Confirmation.

    ........................................

Using ecrater.com OR your own website means you can get paid
in any manner you choose AND charge whatever you want for
    S+H and INS.

<< <i>I believe you can no longer charge for insurance on ebay. >>

I hope that is true, because I really don't like how some sellers will say "I'm not responsible for lost/damaged uninsured items". What that does is that it scares Ebay beginners into paying extra for the insurance (at one time I was really paranoid about getting the insurance), because they're scared that if the package gets lost or damaged during shipping (even if it's the seller's fault; you know, poor packaging job), they're out the item and the seller gets to keep the money. That I think is definitely unacceptable.

They can say whatever they want but with Paypal's rules you'll get your $$ back if lost or damaged. No need for insurance. The seller can state that to scare you, but they can't back it up. Insurance is for the seller, not the buyer.
  • Don't mention insurance whatsoever, and then insure the items you know you can't afford to have lost, either by adding a small fee to the postage of every package, or using USPS insurance or a 3rd-party insurance company.

Also, seriously consider checking out www.shipsurance.com

They charge $1.05 for every $100 of coverage. I have used them for the past several weeks now, and they are obviously much cheaper than the USPS rates (I do ship through USPS almost exclusively).

The very, very nice thing about shipsurance is that you can insure international shipments AND you can insure the cost of shipping!!! image

That's a great thing because sometimes the stuff I ship out costs more to ship than the actual item costs.

If you ship a LOT of items, they also have cheaper rates and other programs available.

They said I did not ship enough to get into one of the programs, but I'm happy with the $1.05 rate for now.

They have a bunch of different rules and procedures, but they are easy to follow, and shipping collectibles is AOK!

You do have to use Delivery Confirmation or some other form of confirmation/tracking, but that's a necessity for Paypal anyway.

And yes, the ebay sellers who say they are not responsible for lost or damaged items are just kidding kidding themselves.... image
