Share your unwanted commons with trick or treaters this Halloween

I did this for several years and kids (boys) really seemed to get a kick out of getting a team bag with 8-10 cards. They did not care what brand, what year, or even what sport, they just thought that was neat and different. Besides, i cant think of any better way to clear out some needed space and share our hobby with some new and potential future enthusiasts. Anyhow, candy is way to addicting for youngsters. image

  • We make up little packets of cards with 3 star/semistar cards and a coupon for a free pack at our store. We give them out at our store and give them to friends and family to give out along with their candy. Kids do still love to get cards.

heh. you're funny. kids are way too smart......we tried that angle one year, "Hey kids! Who likes baseball cards?!?!?" image

ya see, the trouble is: we get a lot of "migrant" families around here on Halloween night, they actually drive in to our neighborhood from other points unknown(yeah, sure) and it's pretty funny to see all the minivans lined up around the block......at around 9pm or so we can then watch the "migrant" families pile back into the minivans with their pillow cases full of booty.

i sincerely doubt that the families in question would give a rats' south side about finding cards in the bag, but all that candy could create a well-rounded diet for months. image

sad but true - how much does a stack of commons cost = how much does a candy bar cost ?

too bad, because I think it is a nice idea.

It always irks me when parents ask me directions on how to get out of the neighborhood.

I live is Salem, Massachusetts. Halloween Capital of the World. Traffic is ridiculous this time of year. I am right downtown, but luckily in a small neighborhood, just off of the tourist areas, no one knows we're here except the others in the neighborhood. Just get plain old local families doing the Trick or Treat thing, very nice. We go through 10-12 bags of candy in about 2 hours, steady, but not overwhelming. I usually buy 3-4 kinds and put one bowl on each stair, letting the Ghouls pick their favorite. The few that ask nicely can pick 2, most just say 'wow, one of each" that gets them the "NO, pick one".

I usually buy a box or two of the cheaper stuff, regular Topps, UD Collectors Choice etc., usually from the current year or previous year, and put a bowl of them out too. Very few pick the cards, my son ends up getting 40 or so packs out of 48. This year I may try some older rack packs. I have some 90 Bowman and 87 Topps Baseball, as well as some 90 Fleer Basketball, think I'll see if some of the Gobblins think they hit the jackpot with an older pack worth a $1, instead of a 10 cent piece of candy that they'll never remember.

I'll report back on Nov 1st, before me and my "Cop" head to Providence for the P'Bruins game vs. Bridgeport.

Ok guys, heres a question. We all remember the good old days where you would go trick or treating and be amazed at all the different brands of candy you found, some you may not have even seen before.

the question is...if you had a good enough disguise, would you ever try to go trick or treating again. I'm 40 and would LOVE to go do it one more time.

This is a great idea!! Anything that promotes the hobby in a positive way and has the ability to attract new collectors at a young age is a good thing in my opinion!!

I got hooked on card when i was eight (i'm 31 now) when someone bought me a box of 86 topps wax (i know, one of the worst years of the 80's) for my birthday. I got two Wade Boggs cards that were priced at $2.50 each. Boggs became my favorite player at that time and I've been collecting cards ever since!!

I have an online friend that I've known for several years who is in her early 30s and still goes Trick or Treating (Halloween is her favorite holiday). Then again, I think women can get away with that kind of thing (without it looking strange I mean) more easily than men.

And when I went tricks or treats, we did that "migrating" thing too. There was this nearby suburb we always went to (it was close to where I originally lived but even when we moved a couple times we still used that suburb).

My wife also loves Halloween, but we don't get any trick or treaters in our apartment and our apartment is a bit too, eh, "cozy" to fit Halloween decorations so we just skip right ahead to Christmas. image You guys will probably think we're nuts but ever since me and my wife were married (2005) we have always put our tree up (and a few other things) when baseball playoffs begin. In fact, we already have a few presents (for my wife) under the tree! I mean all the retailers (including the one I work for) start Christmas decorating in October, so why can't we? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em; that's our motto.
