20'th Century Type - my SLQ has arrived!

Finally I have the coin that will complete my 20'th century type set image It is a nicely toned 1923 quarter. It is not FH but is pretty well struck. So now, wasn't I going to wait for something before I added this to my set??? Hmmmm.

Well, while I'm thinking about that, I could mention my new proof Barber half. I bought it out of Registry fever. I wanted the upgrade in points. Also I was thinking a 1907 PR 65 Cam Barber half might be a good investment. I'm somewhat disappointed. It doesn't look better than my 61 because it is white and mine has some neat peripheral toning. Also if the new one is Cameo then mine is too, and my quarter has even more contrast and my dime could be DCAM. It is true that technically the many, deep hairlines right across the center of Liberties cheek does detract from my piece. I just tilt the coin so I don't have to see that image I bought the quarter and Barber both at Heritage. It didn't look like I could return it. I guess I'll find out if it was a good investment or not.

Now I remember! Wasn't KD about to get some Saints?

  • Carl,

Did I mention that I accidently won a pair of gem Barbers, Dime and Quarter, at Heritage's auction?

I won a 1926 Saintt in 65 at the Kingswood auction, but it is going back, because of some bad coloration on the reverse and some carbon on the obverse.

I should be getting 2 more Saints in the next day or two though. image

  • oooh, I like the lightly toned reverse of your new dime! I did notice an update a few days back...
  • I got both pieces below Greysheet bid, so I never thought that I would win them. I had seen them in Heritage's inventory, in a previous internet auction, and I think at a major show autcion previously as well, with no takers. The dime is just plain neat, the quarter has to be seen to be loved. The scan makes the coin appear considerably darker than it really is, especially over the portrait.

Because of the Barbers, I am scaling back my plans for the gold upgrades. I was thinking about getting the $2.50 & $5 Liberty's in 64, but I think I am only going to go 62 for now. I found a nice $5 Liberty in 63, but it was dated 1900 and I am afraid to snag it until the set compostion is worked out. And no word from PCGS on that yet.

  • Oh yeah, I came close to bidding on that 1923 as well. Was very well struck, since most of the Type 2's don't have the rivets struck below the sash.

  • After spending a day with my new coins I'm pretty happy image That SLQ does have a better strike than many of the FH coins I looked at. The Barber does indeed have very slightly better cameo contrast than mine. It is pretty nice, it is just that I'm really in love with my scratched one.

So, Keith, when can I add my new coins to my set? I'm willing to wait so you can jump past me for a day image
  • I don't know when the two Saints will arrive or the $2.50 Indian I picked up, so you better go ahead and add the coins in before they start weighting this stuff and everybody gets jumbled around. Looks like you should hit the front page for a few days with these upgrades. I did really like that 1921, but I keep holding out hope for a FH that is also well struck. Will settle for a well struck later, since my Type 2 slot is already a 64. Gotta find a nice Type 3 next.

  • Well,

I officialy secured all but one gold piece in MS-62 or better. Not saying which one I am missing yet. image

But I also left enough reserve to make mild upgrades to the Barber half or a SLQ if need be depending on the weighting charts.
