Unfortunately, these boards bring out the worst in some folks. Travis, if you cannot handle that, grow up. You sure seem to have a chip on your shoulder and don't take kindly to an adult telling you. Hopefully, you will take this post to heart and realize how disreprectful you are. I will not PM you but, post my response here for all to read. Again, if you don't like that, so sorry. If you want to play in the big leagues, you had better be sure to take what you dish out. I, for one, can take constructive criticism. You however, seem to type whatever is on your mind without feeling the need to think how your post comes off and then take issue (with chest puffed up) with any counter response you receive. That, young man, is a sign of immaturity. Your tone, young man, is one of disrespect. Maybe it is time to grow a set of cajones to back up that mouth of yours. I did not look to pick a fight with you, but it sure seems that you would look to do so with me. If you'd like go around the dance floor a few times, I'll be happy to oblige. If you'd rather think for a bit before responding and look to reply tactfully with forethought, I'd be more than happy to avoid the verbal slugfest. The choice is yours. It is far better to build a bridge than to take up offence image

Any mature adults on the board care to respond as well? This is an open forum!

Travis, Lee and Gary, can we please put an end to this, which is a bit off topic now. You've all said your piece, and I am sorry I started the unprofessional conduct with my "loser" comment, but let's not continue down this road. Please let it go.

Charmy, that would be fine with me. I did not look to pick a fight with Travis. He is clearly insulted by my truthful yet tactful response to his initial juvenile post. His total lack of respect for adults and fellow board members (ie... my friend, tough etc..) is disgusting and one of the reasons that I lurked so long before joining these boards. His attitude on this post is reprehensible and I hope you reread it and then make the judgement. His behavior has no place on these boards. Do you agree with that assessment?

So lets go back to what I said. I would rip somebody apart, metaphorically, if they were deceitful to me and/or scammed me or any one of my friends. I don't put up with scammers and/or deceitful people. Once again, this guy knew what he was doing, stole pictures that were not his, and compared to the coin he posted on ebay...Well it is a big difference between Charmy's and this guy's.
Still stand by what I said, there might be no need for my "disrespectful nonsense" but there is certainly no room for any more lying or deceitful trickery that we have seen in the marketplace, can we agree on that?

Just got back from a long weekend of golf and recreation with my buddies - glad to see everyone getting along so famously!

It's pretty obvious that this eBay seller is a pretty harmless (and apparently clueless) person. They have ignorantly grabbed some random photos off of the Interweb and used them to represent items that they are selling. I thonk that it's just a silly mistake on their part - given their apparent educational level represented by their use of language.

As well, A lot of unsophisticated folks incorrectly figure that if they can save an image off of the Internet, it must be in the public domain (or at least, OK for them to use free of charge). I even know some more sophisticated people who have used images that they thought, in good faith, were OK and they have gotten legal letters demanding corrective action. It happens.

Guys, lighten up for just a moment. Of course, there is always time for escalation - but I've learned that I don't always have to start out both barrels blazing. Sometimes just a quick "please stop, that's mine" works. I know how hard it is to tolerate stupidity, but sometimes it's really just ignorance.

Blinded, thank you for your reasonable and insightful sensibleness, it is much appreciated. And I completely agree that this seller is not very sophisticated and is perhaps shall we say.... naive. However, allow me to add that I did ask the seller to remove my photo, but he ignored me because he thought it was perfectly legal to use someone else's photos as long as he "found" them through google photo. Hopefully, this seller has now learned differently and won't continue to use others' photos. In any event, I really appreciate this forum's efforts in getting him to remove my/Todd's photo - a big fat THANK YOU! image

I have learned from these fleaBay losers that you really really really need to put a copyright notice on your images. Even that is not 100% fool proof, I have seen my copyright notice on images on fleaBay several times - that does make it easier to have the fleaBay police come in though.

Yes, I try to put my watermark on images even posted here. That doesn't stop them from just pasting their watermark over mine. I've caught that happening a few times. --Jerry

It seems more over, members on websites are doing ebay's policing... I wonder at all if ebay knew this would turn out the way after probably firing employees and or cutbacks to have other people do their work for free.

JMHO... Again, I see opinion bashing on the boards... Let's all talk like civil minded people here.. Yea I am new to this forum, but, not new to coin collecting. John

Which leads to my question. Charmy, do not take this as an insult but just a question and hopefully we have a legal eagle here somewhere. Your website is in my favorites and I go to your site to drool every now and then. I digress, the question.

You have a very beautiful photo beneath each of your posts here but I see NO copyright notice so why can't I, I NEVER WOULD, copy the pic and use it anywhere I want to? I do not think that the fact you have a site and the photos are copyrighted would cover this pic here under your posts.

Just a question anyone want t chime in and tell me legally why I am wrong?

I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on TV...

No, seriously - from my understanding, it comes down to your use of the images. Not too much problem if you were to grab an image and use it with abandon in, say, a message board icon. It's when you use a copyrighted image in a commercial fashion - and the right holder asserts their rights - that you start the fun.

Also, your own original works are copyrighted as soon as you say they are - simply by asserting them.

That's my simple answer as I understand it - please chime in if this is your area of legal specialization.

Because copyright attaches automatically with the creation of the work. There is no longer any requirement that a notice of copyright be filed with the US copyright office (as was the case long ago) or to even add the little 'c' inside a circle notation on the work itself (as was the case not that long ago). Nowadays, if you create an original piece of work, it's copyrighted without you doing anything more.

    fyi.

I struggle with the copyright issue on the coins. MY problem is at times I watermark them images, then I stop. When I watermark them, people on different boards have complained. When I dont this happens on EBAY. I have hundreds of images on my site, most are hard to find, but do I really want the copyright on the images when I am advertising to potential photography clients? To me it is a total catch......

Thanks and I think I have seen dozens of copyright infringements on coin collecting sites. Such as posting a picture for someone who ask what such and such looks like but the person helping them goes out and finds one on the internet and makes it a part of their post. Absolutely most are their own pics and most leave me drooling.

    Again thanks for clarifying.

This was kind of my understanding as well that it depended on the use. Now we know.

I'm glad this all got resolved reasonably well. And I don't think calling the guy a loser was that bad. If I'd sent him a note, I would have called him a no good, crooked LauraSpeller! Now that would be bad.image

some say that it is no big deal/take it as a compliment ..... until it happens to them.

(not my theory, as it has happened to me, and it is irritating as heck.)

This happened to me once. Someone lifted an image of mine to sell a coin toner, which didn't make me happy. I wasn't happy that the image was stolen, and I really wasn't happy that it was being used to sell a bottle of coin ruiner. I sent the guy a bill for $50 for his usage of the photo, and had a lawyer friend write a forceful letter. After some back-and-forth, he just wanted me to stop talking to him, so I got my $50, and he took the image down image
