87 Down--1935 C & T. Bridgewater Ltd Film Stars 4th Series Completed in PSA 8 or Better

My 13th non-sport and 87 set overall completed in PSA 8 or better is the oldest and in the highest grade of any non-sport set I have completed. My 1935 C & T. Bridgewater set comes intact from noted non-sports collector Steve Lucas(Vorthian).

What distinguishes this set is the selection of film stars and the condition of the cards. First condition--the set has a stqaggering 9.64 Set Rating--easily #1 on the PSA Set Registry. The 48 card set consists of 32 PSA 10s(!), 14 PSA 9s, 1 PSA 8.5 and 1 PSA 8. Secondly the set is full of legends. In PSA 9 are Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Fay Wray, Shirley Temple and Greta Garbo. In PSA 10 are Bing Crosby, Katherine Hepburn, Fred Astaire and Mae West.

I continue to be interested in expanding my high grade vintage non-sports collection in preparation for the opening of The Vintage Card Museum.

My goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goal.

    Archaninator,

The criteria I am using is availability in high grade and if I like them. Since the British movie star sets aren't very popular(at least in the U.S.) it gives me a chance to collect 1930s sets in ultra high grade that I like!

I would imagine more of the sets in the UK will find there way into PSA slabs and the sets will grow in popularity.

    What do you think?

    Ralph,

Not sure about that--some of these cards either do not exist or are ultra rare in high grade.

    Thanks,

    Jim
  • great stuff jim as usual!

did you get my note about this issue? didnt see them on your list and i think they fit your criteria....also they are VERY pleasant to look at...i have more if you want to see others...

Way to go again Jim . I know nothing about this set. I still like your Mutoscope best.

    Sonny,

Thanks--another one I have been working on a couple of years will be able to complete coming up.

1945 Mutoscope is one of my favorites too.

    Fandango,

I don't think I have any cards from that issue--love the beauties

  • Highly recommend this set Jim...should be attainable in PSA 8 and above...

With a name like "MAMO" CLARK, wouldn't you think they would at least give us a frontal view like the Kathleen Cummings card? LMAO

Jim ... once again, nice set. (No, there isn't an alternative meaning! haha)

Jim - now to get you to take the plunge into R423. Hall of Famer 8s can sometimes be found for $20 or less. It's a mix of current players and retired stars, with over 40% of the cards (121 known cards in the set, counting 2 different Cobb and Greenberg cards) being HOFers. It has playing-days cards of Musial, DiMaggio, and Williams, and retired star power is led by Ruth, Gehrig, and the Cobb cards. There are 3 different back colors, though PSA doesn't recognize these on the labels. The cards feature black and white photos, rather than artist's renderings.
Oh yeah, and the cards are also perforated strip cards measuring 1/2" by 3/4" each (strips of 13 cards and partial strips can also be found regularly).
You know you want to. image

BTW, I have no affiliation with the seller of that card, which is in an eBay store.

Come on PSA ... if you are going to grade them get a slab that fits them! The slabs look so good on cards when the right sized card is in the slab, but when the wrong size card is in there it looks terrible!

Jim, congrats on your latest non-sports set! I like those Bridgwater cards!

In fact I picked-up this 1940 Bridgewater Film Stars 8th Series #21 James Stewart PSA 9 just a few days ago!

image Note: This is not the correct scan, as my card has a PSA cert # 14378476 (seller had two examples!)

"You know you want to"--you're right Nick--I can't resist collecting a set like that which is my wheelhouse. Guess I will start.

    Doug--thanks.

RD--thanks, I like the other Bridgwater sets as well and will try to complete others. Trying to complete that 61 Nu Card set in 10 and have made some progress.
