Second - SHAME on ESPN for showing this on Sportscenter [i[instead of professional hockey. I was watching Sportscenter the day before yesterday and wanted to see the piece on "Red Wings and Sabres" that was on their box to the left. Instead they interviewed some football player too long and skipped right past the story.
I know Sportscenter has slacked on the hockey over the past few seasons, I can't believe it takes a kid to make a great shot like that to get hockey on the air over there! When it comes to hockey they only show the big stuff, Ovechkin, Crosby, a great shot by a pee-wee....basically cherrypick.
<< <i>I saw that on sportscenter last night. awesome. reminded me of that goal Michigan scored against Minnesota from behind the net. >>
I wouldn't be surprised if the kid was inspired by that goal - it's shown on TV a million times year on any NCAA programming. I love that goal myself - remember when it happened and jumping out of my chair. Incredible goal, done in a playoff game. Awesome.
As for ESPN, they crap on hockey because they don't broadcast it. They hated the sport when they had the contract - never having a consistent day/time for games, never talking about the games, etc - so they're for sure going to dump on it now that they don't have a contract for it.

i figured it had something to do with contracts...
i loved watching tom mees, bill celemnt (and the other guy who was always with clement) on espn national hockey night
steve yzerman said in an interview on that college michigan goal that sure he (and others) could do that, and have had fun with it in practice - but when you are a professional you cannot play around like that in games.....that has stuck in my mind since.

Loved Tom Mees, couldn't stand Bill Clement and Gary Thorne. Those two were awful - constantly wrong uniform numbers, player names, and just lousy commentary.

I love Stevie Y. He's my favorite athlete of all-time and I have all the respect in the world for him but he's just flat wrong here. The kid scored with that move - he wasn't "playing around". It's no more "playing around" than Gretzky flipping the puck over the net from in-behind to score off the goalie's back. In fact, it's less so - the Michigan guy never gives up control of the puck with his move.
