It sounds like it was a professional job, and I'll bet the coins are destined for sale outside the country. Perhaps our international members could keep watch for us.

This reward and subsequent recovery of coins is one of the great coin stories of our time.

Just wondering, can anybody tell us the final totals pledged and collected? Julian?

Whoa, I missed this back when it happened...was Mr. Leidman okay (I've stopped at his table a time or three at Baltimore and there is one very nice Japanese coin in my Dansco courtesy of Julian!)? Was there a recovery of the items?

Julian wasn't hurt and most of the coins were recovered. I'm just wondering if the reward got paid as promised.

I am uncertain of the total amount of pledges, but I do know that much of the pledged money has been paid out. I had nothing to do with the establishment or disbursement of the fund, but I am eternally grateful to those that pledged and to Ken Starrett, who provided the link to the individual that purchased the stolen inventory. That individual has pleaded guilty, but has not been sentenced yet.

The FBI, who I am also eternally grateful to, recovered what I estimate to be 90% of the inventory, an amount that the FBI was astounded at, as when they ever recover anything, it is normally about 5% of the value.

The inventory that was recovered had an estimated retail value of nearly four million dollars.

I will never know everything that was not recovered, but I estimate that it was probably another 10%.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I had missed that too when it was first posted.

Judging from the coins that were posted, and the speed at which the interested parties responded and dealt with it, selling any of these coins, would be just as tough as selling a stolen Degas painting from a museum. I assume that the 10% that hasn't been recovered was probably the only ones that they were able to sell straight away, still worth almost half a million.

Glad that it had a nice ending, and when and if the seller's identity will also be released, as well as details of the shady transaction, I agree that it will make a great story.
Andy seems the right candidate to tell it to the next generations. image
