Freaking 1972 Topps Nazi

I really had wanted this card!

But I had no clue that the bidding would be so intense. My snipe bid wasn't even close to the final hammer price. I thought $80-, and I would have this card in the bag. Oh well!

Mike> PSA 9s have been off the chart for about the last two weeks. I have no idea what the deal is.

Marc -- If you would sell me your 1951 Bowman PSA 9 Phillies cards then you would have more money for those kind of purchases.

    Marc,

As one of the usual 72 PSA 9 nutjobs. I have to tell ya - this guy came out of nowhere. Most of the really heavy 72 PSA 9 players figured that it would go on the underside of $100. Welcome to my world.

And people wonder why I do more and more submitting on my own...

Man, thats a lot of sugar for a '70's card. What with you '72 guys? I picked up a '65 Phillies team PSA-9 for my registry set at half that price...jay
  • Sellers everywhere are thanking the PSA set registry for these increased prices!!!

Lookin over the auctions that Diamondmint has bid on the last month - he's not one of ours... Until now, he's only bid on Steve Garvey and Dodger Team cards both in PSA 9. Just looks like one of those random buzzsaws that you run into now and agin...

The current PSA 9 pricing situation is like a first time "free agency" for all the set collectors! image

It has definitely put the fun back into set collecting again. And, I am guilty of it as well!

    Mikeschmidt,

And you thought the price was ridiculous on the Phillies Team. Check out what happens when you get a high powered set builder up against a high powered Team card collector - both with an eye on the Big Red Machine...image

    That is one nice card.

Don't feel bad Mike, I needed this card for my PSA 8 team set, I bid 205. Didnt come close.

I've noticed that the 9's have also gotten a bit pricey lately.

  • It seems that the cards auctioned by the bbexchange person on ebay tend to bring huge amounts more frequently than other auctions. Several of the high dollar auctions were his during the past month or so. I may have him sell some of my cards.

  • Carlos told me that the 72 Series 1 Checklist #4 would go for $50.00. Figuring that he'd snipe me, I bid $75.00. Well someone else sniped me.

    This is getting unbelievable.

  • Wayne, I don't know how bbexchange does it but his cards did it to me as well. I ended up paying more than double what I should have paid. I thought he had someone working with him, running up the prices. There was no one I could consistently point to. I don't know ... maybe it's just me being paranoid. He does have the low pop cards and when he puts them out there people just come out of the woodwork bidding on them.

good luck. I know I don't have patients so I will pay the prices.

BBCExchange happens to be a 90 minute drive from my apartment. I try to get there about every 4 to 6 weeks. Steve is a truly awesome dealer. As with all dealers on eBay, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. I've picked up some things from his eBay stuff super-cheap (i.e. 70T Billy Williams PSA7 for $3.25). Other stuff I've not been so lucky. He submits a lot of stuff and has a good eye. I like dealing with him because he's honest and a good guy in general. I bid on his auctions with complete confidence that I'm not being shilled.

For any of the 72 set builders, they already know Factor Jim is definitely a serious 72 collector. He seemed to take some time off, but last week I saw him bidding on a few things and he seems to definitely be back now. The $76 bid for the Series 1 checklist totally blew me away. Especially considering I found out that the one I just submitted at the Sun-Times show came back an 8. At this point the population is 6 in PSA8, and I know the whereabouts of four of them - the one that BBCX just auctioned, one I know is being held by another dealer, and there are two in PSA8 that I personally submitted. There are no 9s of this card as of yet. And sorry guys. . .my duplicate is already spoken for.

Dude> The PSA9s for 1972 have been insane for the past month or so. There's a new player who seems to have very deep pockets.

On a side note, I couldn't believe the turnaround of this latest submission. 50 cards - all 1972 submitted under the Set Registry Special at the Sun-Times show on 3/15-17. Order received - 3/19 -- Order shipped - 3/25. THAT'S LESS THAN ONE CALENDAR WEEK!!! And. . .I got my second 1st Series Checklist in PSA8 (already spoken for) and four PSA9s - two of which are the first 9s of that card (Moose and Siebert). This one broke out as four PSA9. . .36 in PSA8. . .and ten in PSA7. And two of the 7s were submitted knowing full well they were 7s - Schaal IA and an Expos Team. Of the 36 PSA8s. . .ten of them upgrade cards I have in 7 and 17 of them are new additions. And two of the 9s are new additions. Gee. . .85% doesn't look so far away anymore image

I could not agree more. Steve at BBCardExchange is amazing. I just completed a trade of around $400 SMR on both sides. The deal took 3 emails and in less than 9 calendar days we each had our cards. Steve is a credit to the hobby.

    Thanks for the recommendation Mike!

I congratulate mcastaldi on his quick turnaround time under the 70s set registry special. Frustrating to me is the fact that I submitted close to 50 cards to PSA under the same special (two invoices in one box received by PSA on 3/5 and 3/6) yet have not received my cards. Only one of the invoice results is posted on the web page. I would like to think that PSA grades the same level tiered cards in the order received. It appears not from this information. I have sent an e-mail to PSA and would hope they can explain this. image

Mefer> If it's any consolation, I've found that when I have an order turned around quickly enough to surprise me, there are almost always more 7s than usual. In this case, to get 20% in PSA7 surprised me. I'm normally somewhere between 10 and 15% 7s. Also. . .to get only four PSA9s was somewhat surprising. In past submissions I've tended to be closer to 15% 9s. While I didn't look these over quite at strenuously as my usual orders since I wanted to get them turned in at a show, I didn't think they were as far off as the grades reflected. But. . .that's why they play the games (to steal a phrase).

    Mike--

Interesting points, thank you. I would like to speculate then that my outstanding invoice (all 71 Topps baseball) has one or two cards being considered for PSA 9 and that is what is taking so long (I guess a boy can dream, can't he???). If such is the case, you can crack out the Crayolas and color me tickled pink. I am anxious to see if your theory holds correct. image Anyone else have thoughts on this? I guess there could be some invoices containing more difficult issues of cards, like the 71 Topps, that could take more time to grade.

Maybe, just maybe, they are considering a couple of yours for PSA 10's........

If I got a 10 on a 71 Topps baseball card ... well, I don't know what I would do. I seriously doubt it, but I will continue to dream and see if the theory holds true!!! image
