My sincerest apologies. Mitch Spivach posted your original posting on CCE. I followed it up with a link to your inventory from your webpage:

As you are aware Julian Leidman, a fellow coin dealer, was a victim of a robbery Sunday upon driving home from Coinfest.

Laura Sperber and I are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for this robbery.

We will expand this post with additional information and details as they become known.

    Julian:

If you think you may have had a tracking device placed on your car, I wonder if the garage security tapes from the Hilton Garage would be of help in finding clues. I don't know how long they keep those tapes, but you should make sure the investigators follow that up ASAP.

Also, try to remember anyone out of place who seemed to be loitering near your table at the show.

I hope for the safe return of all those coins.

There is only one driveway to get out of the Hilton, and essentially only one way to get to I-95. There are also lots of traffic cams along that stretch of the highway because of the conjestion. If Julian was being followed, perhaps there is a way to piece together the various tapes and see what car seems to appear near him throughout the journey. I'm no detective, but it is just a thought.

Longacre- Yes, the highway has cameras that might help, if they were following him. Hopefully, they`ll look into this.
  • moonshinemoonshine Posts: 1,039 ✭✭
yes, definitely sounds like he was being followed. A random person wouldn't know there were coins in there. Maybe they can get license number of several potential 'followers' from the webcams.

Would PCGS or NGC take that list and look for several of those coins coming in on one submission that fit those descriptions?
  • Julian, I'm so sorry for what happened. Was fingerprinting done on your car? Since they seemed to be professionals, I'd suspect gloves were worn, but sometimes they make really stupid mistakes. Let's hope they make a big one very soon.

The cameras are a good idea and need to be looked into, but I don’t think the State of New Jersey is going to take the time nor the expense to research this venue in a Grand Larceny (the perps know this) Now, had there been armed robbery, injury to a person, then yes, the DA would be obliged to take every avenue available to solve the crime. Unless someone knows insiders to the legal process in the state, county or city it happened in, don’t hold your breath with an investigation.

I think Julian is smart enough to know all this, but keep the suggestions and ideas coming in and spread the word. If this information gets blanketed across the area and outwards, there is a chance of recovery.

Note: A private investigator can obtain all this information on behalf of the client.

Was the 1892-O BM Proof Morgan among the coins? If so, I believe I attributed it as a VAM-10, though that should hardly be necessary for identification.

Julian had such a broad inventory that assuredly something will be identified as the material surfaces. The disparate nature of the inventory also means it wasn't a contracted heist for a collector. Serial numbers of the notes would be very useful. They would stand out as the easiest to identify as long as that information is available. I would suggest not listing them on a very public place though, but that is a tough judgment call to make.

Hope for all the best in the recovery. I have no doubt that some of this will be located. This is not like the du Pont coins that hid for a long time.

Well, I know that one if I see it! I hate thieves.
  • Was anyone at the show taking a "greater than normal interest" in a wide variety of your inventory? If their were cameras at the show itself, you should see if you could get a copy of those. The parking lot too. If you could pin point someone at your table and near your vehicle, that would be a good place to start. I believe you were tailed, they knew what you had and took the effort. Best of luck recovering it.
  • Julian should save those details for the police, I guess. Anyone with such info can contact Julian by PM, or contact the police themselves.

    Julian,

I just had an idea about how you could POSSIBLY get your coins back. I know that you said a laptop was stolen. Did you have your email passwords saved on that computer? If so, the perpertrator might be logging in to your email to cause some ruckus. What you should do is download a program such as Win Spy which I am told with you can send a keylogger as an .exe, .ppt. or .xls file. If the crook opens it up, I believe it will simply install the software onto their (your) computer. Then, if they go log into their Facebook or something, you've got them! You should just send them an email as if you were another dealer, and label it something that they might want to open.

PM me Julian if you might want to try it out. I can probably help if you wanted to try.

On the insurance side of this debacle, unfortunately there is a fair amount of 'bad' case law on the 'unattended vehicle' issue. Most policies will contain some type of exclusion from coverage for a loss that occurs either:
-while in an unattended vehicle, or
-while in a vehicle not occupied by property owner or one of his employees.

One of the better known cases involved a theft claim filed by the infamous Thomas Noe. The reported case is Noe v. Homestead, 173 F.3d 581. There are several other cases discussing the same point. If Julian needs an evaluation of the language within his particular policy I'm sure there is no shortage of forum lawyers, myself included, who would be willing to give him a coverage opinion.
