Reminds me of a good story. My father and I worked card shows from 1981 until 92-93ish(new card glut).
A young boy and his father were looking at cards in my Dad's showcase. The kid saw a card that caught his eye. The lad said "dad, dad look at this 58 Mantle AS card.(At the time, this was a $10ish Mantle card). The father belittled the kid and said cards are a waste of money....blah, blah. The young boy's dad was really a loud obnoxious idiot.

Well, they left our tables and continued looking at other dealers' cases. The boy separated from his father and returned to our tables about a half hour later. My dad remebered the kid and asked him if he really liked the card he previously "glowed" over? The kid was a bit embarrassed from his father's earlier behavior. So my dad handed the boy the card and said you can have it.

The boy ran across the ballroom to show his dad. The father grabbed the kid and dragged him to our tables. The dad immediately started shouting at my father about how he was taking advantage of a 12 year old kid. Further, he demanded that my dad at least give him a better price. He did all this shouting while his son kept pulling at his sleeve and trying to interupt his rant.

When the man finally shut up, my dad calmly said " Can I do better on the price?" "I gave your son the card...FREE!" No thank you from the father. He just pulled his kid away and left. The boy looked back and said "Thank you"!

Just a quick story about values of cards and a gr8 memory of my Pop.
