Hockey game - Non-hockey fan

Went to the Shark's game last night with some friends. Have been to less than 10 hockey games in my 40+ years of life. My last hockey game was about 10 years ago. What a blast last night! Great crowd, great venue, and a really fast and fun game. Lots of goals scored which was fun. Oh ya, and several fights! Lastly, a guy had a hat trick which was awesome. I would say between 100 and 200 hats were thrown onto the ice. Though I only knew the names of a few of the Shark's and non of the Columbus players it was really awesome. Will definitely get to another game this season. Highly recommended for you non-hockey fans.

I feel the same way whenever I go to a Hockey game..........then 3-4 years go by, before I get to another game and I live 20 minutes from where the Ducks play!

I don't think there's a sport that loses more in translation from in-person experience to boob tube.

  • Glad you had fun! image I heard about the hat-trick...it was Dany Heatley. We know him well here in Atlanta.

Agreed -- all levels of hockey from youth to NHL are a blast to watch in person.

Hockey is absolutely the most fun sport to watch in-person! image

I went to a lot of Avalanche games during the 3 1/2 years I was stationed in Colorado Springs, and still try to make the drive from San Antonio to Dallas a couple of times a year to see the Stars play.

Soccer ranks way up there. As does (oddly enough) bowling.
  • I've never been a hokey fan, and one night a few years ago I got free tickets to a Washington Capitols game. We lived only a mile or so from the stadium so we went. What a blast! I thought I became an instant hockey fan that night. The next night, I tried to watch it on TV and didn't even get past the first period. Watching it live is the only way to go.

Yeah, Soccer blows on TV. When I travel to Europe, I find the cricket games more interesting than soccer on the Tele.
  • Soccer has tried for years to catch on in the US. It'll never happen.

    Hockey is where it's at!
There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in.
  • Being at the rink of course is preferable to watching on tv. I watch about ten games a week on tv. Absolutely love it! I can watch every Blues game, all the Canadiens' games and then the Penguins, Capitals........ Take a person to a game and they pretty much will always become a fan--I think. One of my best experience's was taking a girlfriend to her first hockey game when Brett Hull was on the Blues, and it was opening night. The action is so so fast now it is unbelievable. These guys are moving at 30 mph and hitting the heck out of each other, and that's not counting the bare fisted brawls that sometimes break out. Sport Science on FSMW had a show a few weeks ago that showed football players hitting someone at like 15 mph....double that and with little friction to sometimes absorb a hit...wow. It's no wonder they have a lot of concussions each year (the league in general that is, not each player. Mark Messier is developing a new helmet that will hopefully protect the players better that should be out soon.)

As you can see by my user name, golf is also something I love. It has also been said that watching golf on tv is boring...it can be. I guess it depends on your level of interest in the sport, trying to learn things, who the players in contention that week are, the venue they're playing, whether or not you have anything else to do, lol....

I don't mind watching soccer on tv since that's pretty much the only way to see top notch, professional-level soccer in the midwest. World Cup mens and womens action is COOL. I can't imagine what it would be like to see one of those games live, or a premier league game maybe.

Basketball loses just a little on tv. Just a great sport to watch either live or televised.

American football, I just can't get into it. Too much downtime between plays... Plus it would cut into my hockey viewing if I had to watch that too....gotta have a life, lol.
