$2 1/2 gold question, Why wasn't In God We Trust added in 1866

Does anyone know why on the classic liberty $2 1/2 dollar coin the motto "In God We Trust" wasn't added in or after 1866?
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

    Not enough room. Same thing with the dime and half dime.
