Actually Wayne, there's another thread on this in the Sportscard forum. And I think I'll have to get a VIP membership so I can get in 1/2 hour early and beat you to the 75s
I'll probably be wearing my IU cap most of the time. . .red with a big I on it. Yes, I'm an alum and they better beat Utah!
Wayne> I was funnin. I'll be looking for 75s, but the priority will be 72s. As I get over 75%, I know those will get tougher. So time to look cards for the other sets I'm doing - 75 and 59T.
Just got back from the show, pretty good crowd for a Friday night. GAI was accepting submissions, there set-up was far from impressive. I didn't see many submitting with the exception of a couple PSA Dealers. Some GAI graded cards were seen on dealer tables, the majority were at Piedmont Cards. PSA seemed to have good traffic. Will be back again Sat working on my 56's. Interested in what anyone else thought.
pjam> I was also pretty impressed. I'm not so sure about traffic, but it seemed to have a much better feel than the last Sun-Times show back in November. I was happy to pick up quite a few 72s. . .now to get the submission ready
Would anyone going to this show be willing to pick me up three black cardboard PSA boxes and ship them to me? With some of the recent posts concerning long ship times for these boxes and Mike stating that the best place to pick these up is at shows, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out. I just don't have any shows nearby. Thanks to anyone who is willing to do this.

David> When I turned in a 50-card submission today, I asked about the black PSA boxes and they're still backordered. I wanted to buy ten of them for me.
NOTE TO PSA - When the number of submissions increase, it should be that much more crucial to ensure these are on hand. These have been backordered for several weeks - shame on you PSA!!!!!
I just got back from the show and the traffic was pretty tremendous on Saturday. It was really sparce Friday night. This afternoon you could hardly even move between the tables because of so many people. From what I saw there were less dealers this year than in the past. (At least it seemed that way) I did notice a number of GAI cards and I asked some of the dealers about them and they were actually cross grading PSA cards into GAI holders. When I asked why they said they liked the owners of the company. Overall it was a pretty good show.
Wayne> It did seem like there was a lot of traffic. I saw only a couple dealers with GAI stuff. Quality Cards out of WI seemed to have the most. I didn't ask about them, but I have a hard time believing the reason for crossing over is strictly one of friendship. The market is just too competitive for that.
There were 3 dealers with at least one case of GAI cards and another dealer with a handful of cards. I agree with you Mike in that friendship doesn't seem to be a likely reason. Maybe there is some kind of financial incentive. I don't really know why. One thing that did strike me is that most of the "class b" graders were not there nor were their cards. I don't know if some of them have gone under or if they just aren't setting up at some of the shows. They really weren't missed.
Although I am far from even average at grading cards, the cards I saw in Gai holders were mostly 9's and looked very good. Maybe GAI was bumping grades for dealers but it was self evident glancing at the cards. Someone with more experience than me might be able to say otherwise. If I was re-opening a grading company from scratch I would try and offer financial incentives to several of the major dealers for using my company while still maintaining the integrity of the grading. I'm not sure what's happening but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
From what I understand, PSA 7's are crossing over to GAI 8's pretty consistently....and the GAI 8's are selling at around 50% of the PSA 8 price - which is almost always still higher than the PSA 7 price.
Example:
1957 Topps Mantle in PSA 7 (SMR $910.00) crosses over to a GAI 8. The GAI 8 sells for 50% of the PSA 8 SMR ($2900.00) -- $1450.00
Basically, in the example used above, the crossover allows you to sell a $910.00 card for $1450.00
FATCAT - That theory sounds good! (Getting a higher grade and selling it at half the PSA value, which would still be higher then the PSA-7 value) - But are consumers buying the GAI cards? It may be fine and dandy that some dealers are highlighting a few in their showcase, but are they selling? And is the public coming back for more if so?...jay
Hold on guys. I very much doubt that GAI is purposely bumping the grades of PSA 7's to GAI 8's. I can also tell you that there not doing any favors for dealers in that aspect. It would only harm there reputation to do so. Also do people think Mike Baker all of a sudden forgot how to grade cards? He and Adam are the ones who have been grading the higher priced cards at PSA for years. If anything the grading at PSA would be suffering. Are PSA cards going to sell higher than GAI cards. YES right now they will. In fact if people were astute they would be buying GAI cards in 8 and 9 if they could get a good deal. The only, and I can atest to this favor, GAI is doing for dealers is charging less than PSA with a quicker turnaround time. Will I send cards to GAI ? Yes I will, Steve is a friend of mine. I'll will still send to PSA also. They have also treated me well. Right now PSA will still get the bulk of my business but as there reputation grows and there cards bring higher prices I'll submit accordingly. The losers in this battle will probrably be SGC, and thats a shame because there a good and honest group also.

1976 Topps PSA 8 or better
1961 Pirates Team Set
1972 Pirates Team Set
I will also be looking for 1971 PSA 8s and 1963's. I will also look for any of these years ungraded.
Working on a trade for a T206 Cobb Batt of Shoulder PSA 7 so my trade stock is down.
I will definitely be there. We're coming in Friday and will be there all day Saturday also.
