How many of you play the sport you love and collect?

Here are a few pics of my playing hockey, just wondering how many others are out there. I might take up softball this spring if I have time not really sure why I want to play, but it's been on my mind for some time now...I haven't played base/softball since I struck out at t-ball when I was a kid...

Of every person I've ever played hockey with (and I've been playing since I was five) not one has ever been the collector...

I've been playing softball for the last 15 years or so, first with my church's team, and now with a bunch of 40-50 year old dudes. Old guys won our league this year, though, so that was pretty cool.

I play on a 55+ baseball team in the SF Bay Area.

    I love it!
  • of course ...

  • I collect primarly Pre WWII baseball and I play in a Vintage Base Ball league. That's me on the left getting a hit off of Jim Bouton earlier this year.
Learn some history of the game. Join a vintage base ball team in your area and get out there.

Even if I found them, I don't think there would be a large market for cards of Triathletes and Marathoners! LOL

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I collect baseball cards, and I've been playing softball since 1997 (graduated HS in 1995). I play in multiple leagues in the summer and fall.

Here is a funny pic of me with my game face on! image

I am a fairly large person (6'5" 300lbs.), but that bat is a little league softball bat. Thought it would be funny, lol

I played basketball and golf in college and still play golf about once a week during the summer. I've never really collected golf cards, but have bought a case of '01 Upper Deck Golf and have a lot of golf memorabilia. I also don't really collect all that much basketball but would certainly buy any vintage basketball at a good price.

I played baseball until high school and my Georgia All-Star team won the 13-14 year old state championship. That was my last year playing baseball as I had to choose between it and golf as both were spring sports.
  • Patrick,

Thanks for sharing photos of your hockey play. That's really cool. It isn't many people that both play and collect the same sport. There should be more. I have some hockey-player co-workers. I wonder how they would react if I brought my 1911 C55 Georges Vezina card into work?

In fact, for me I have to be an athlete first and a collector second. However, as a competitive long-distance runner, there sure aren't many cards to collect in my sport (though I have actually seen some on eBay). I attend NFL and MLB games. Of course, neither Brian Westbrook nor Ryan Howard have ever watched even one of my running races. image

Jeffcbay...if there is ever a Jim Thome biopic movie/documentary, you should have a pretty good shot at the leading roleimage.
  • I collect mostly basketball (Larry Bird, 1986-1987-1988 Fleer, Celtics subsets) and played some, but bad knees have curtailed the playing days as well as the lack of talent. Grew up with the Celtics of the 60's and 70's. Loved the NBA when Bird & Magic showed up. To keep in it I have been coaching girls' basketball mainly going from the AAU circuit, to high school JV, then Varsity, and now coaching at a state college in Massachusetts.

I'll be 50 in a couple of months...still play D level adult beer league hockey though.

My skills are about as good as the team I grew up with, the Oakland/California Golden/not Golden Seals.

    Lotta fun though.

  • Great topic. I played golf, basketball and baseball in high school and continued playing golf throughout college. Now 10 years later I play in a flag football and and play golf when its warm the 3 months of the year in Ohio. I collect vintage baseball along with a few modern baseball and golf.
