Mile High Card Auction last night?!? Thoughts?

The Mile High auction ended last night...I won a few lots.......not as many as I would have liked,......got outbid around 4 in the morning from a West Coaster while I was fast asleep.....does anyone else dislike that auction format besides me?

Yes. Auctions should end at a particular time, period, with no extra bidding period.

I hate the format! I hate having to sit up and wait out the extra bidding period, I think thats a joke.

I lost a lot at 4:30 am where there was only 1 other potential bidder , not sure how I am supposed to compete with that .

there are pros and cons to both formats

if you are on the west coast and on a budget this is the best format as you an go back and bid on other items if you get outbid on lots you were winning.

if you are on the east coast and need t osleep , this format stinks as you never know if you win although I guess you could go to bed early and wake up at 4 in the morning to bid

While I dont like the format as a buyer, if I was a seller it would be a must have for an auction house.

I don't think it is a can't lose for the seller.....all the West Coasters have to do is wait for the East Coasters to go to bed. I like Hunt Auctions format ALOT better....it forces you to bid, or GET OFF THE POT!!! No waiting for someone to go to bed so you can win something.....and I know I can do a proxy bid, but I am just not comfortable doing that sort of thing.....

If the auction house wants to keep a lot open so long as there is a bid within 15 minutes I am OK with that. (As long as the bidder has put in a bid prior to the "closing" time). HOWEVER, when they keep EVERY LOT OPEN so long as ONE lot gets a bid, I think that is Bullshlt.

1,000 lots in an auction ... auction "closes" at 9:00pm ... at 9:14 Johhny puts in a bid on lot #10 ... ALL 1,000 lots remain open for bidding ... makes no sense to me!!!!!

i lost every single lot I bid on, probably around 20. I bid what I was willing to pay, which in some cases was quite high. However, the demand was strong for the vintage cards I was bidding on. Surprisingly strong in this economic environment.

The Ryan card was a 1973 topps graded psa 10. $28.6k including buyers premium!! Amazes me...

I don't mind the format, but may be able to cut down the amount of time in "extra innings" if they cut the 15 minute increments down to something shorter (like five minutes)...

How does Hunt work?

Can someone explain the difference in price between these two Ty Cobb bat off sholder cards that both sold in last nights MHCC auction:
Lot 79: PSA 4.5 (no qualifiers) Piedmont back - $4,500
Lot 81: PSA 4.0 (no qualifiers) Piedmont back - $1,600

In Hunt Auctions, the overtime is on a PER LOT basis.....all lots end at different times......none of this extending the entire auction BS just because one lot is bid on.....in Hunt, if you have a bid interest in a lot after 9:00, there is a 20 minute countdown ON THAT LOT ONLY! Either bid, or get out of the way!! No waiting until someone goes to bed so you can steal something........and I know I can proxy bid.....I just refuse to do that.....

I agree on proxy bidding. don't feel comfortable doing that on high ticket items, becuase... you just never know.

My thoughts are auction houses are stupid and I'm considering lobbying my legislature to pass a law prohibiting any auction house employee or relative of an employee from bidding on an item.

OK you all are only looking at this from the buyers side.

Here is the sellers side and im sure they have it this way to keep their consignors happy-

I placed 9 bids on lots I had an interest in, of those 9 I really wanted one but it was also the most expensive one. I was the leader in it all night but if I lost out at any time I was prepared to use those fund to purchase 3 of the other auctions I also wanted. In this case the sellers gets better prices because if the other lots had closed and I was outbid on the one I wanted then I would have been shut out of the other auction and woudl have spent zero. This is also the format REA uses.


If I had items to consign I would 100% go this route.

I agree with getting consignors the most money. I also agree that this format DEFINITELY favors the West Coast bidders.....ESPECIALLY during the week......

I also don't see the point in dragging out the WHOLE auction....Hunt does it best!! Like I said...you either BID....or GET OFF THE POT!!!! Don't wait for people to go to bed before you sneak one in without any competition......that is why you never see Ebay auctions ending at 4 in the morning.....

Ya, but i can't stand the last minute sniper bids on eBay. I can't tell you how many times I was the second highest bidder and lost by a few dollars by a last SECOND sniper!!

I think eBay should extend the auction by a few minutes if someone bids with time running down.
