When requesting a new set how do decide weighting?

Hi there. I am looking at requesting a new set and was reading the process. On there its says that if you already have the cards weighted that it won't take as long. So how does one start to consider how to weight each card. It will be a team set and I would think that the hall of famers and star cards would have a higher weighting, but what about the not so popular players and low pop cards? I think that there wouldn't be to many people collecting this set, but I want to have a good weight system. Or do you think that I should just let psa handle this. Any help is much appreciated.

Utilize logic and common sense. The weighting should somewhat closely align to valuation in PSA 8 holder. It's hard to advise specifically without knowing more about the set you have. Most mainstream sets are already on the Registry, and many of the esoteric / player etc. sets have particular nuances that may be tough to evaluate. You could look at similar sets that are already on the Registry as a guide for weighting.

If you tell us more, we could provide better advice.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • The set that I am looking to start would be an 1980-1983 New York Islander dynasty opc set. They had 4 hall of famers on that team with Bossy, Potvin, Trottier and Gillies. So I would assume that those would be the higher weighted cards. I just don't know how to assign the weights. This is the hard part, should I give Bossy a weight of 10 because he was the top star on the team? I want this to be a well weighted set, because I have seen other sets and went what were these people thinking.
  • You might want to start with the set request, in which case PSA would do the weightings, and then follow-up if you think there should be modifications to the weightings assigned by PSA. The reason I suggest this method is that it's likely they will not even approve the set, as I know from another board member that they would not approve a '85 Bears set, as they said it did not fit into any of their categories. Thus, you may want to see if they will even approve the set before wasting your time on the weightings.

You've got the right idea about stars.

Personally, I wouldn't assign extra weight to low pops because that status can always change if there are new submissions. You should probably weight any short prints or (if you submit an older set) high numbers a bit higher (a common that would merit a weight of 1 would probably be more like a 2 or even a 3 if there were fewer of them available originally.)

I included checklists with suggested weighting when I submitted a couple of team sets. They will usually go with your weighting unless it's really off kilter, at least in my experience.

Keep us informed. That sounds like a cool idea for a set.
