Book: Cryonic lab abused Ted Williams' head

Workers at an Arizona cryonics facility mutilated the frozen head of baseball legend Ted Williams - even using it for a bizarre batting practice, a new tell-all book claims. In "Frozen," Larry Johnson, a former exec at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Ariz., graphically describes how The Splendid Splinter" was beheaded, his head frozen and repeatedly abused. The book, out Tuesday from Vanguard Press, tells how Williams' corpse became "Alcorian A-1949" at the facility, where bodies are kept suspended in liquid nitrogen in case future generations learn how to revive them. Johnson writes that in July 2002, shortly after the Red Sox slugger died at age 83, technicians with no medical certification gleefully photographed and used crude equipment to decapitate the majors' last .400 hitter. I'd heard about most of that a few years back - but not about any "batting practice" or the "technicians with no medical certification" part.

The entire Alcor situation is so bizarre. People trying to play God, and it isnt gonna work.. I guess when you are rich you lose your common sense, and your head...

By the way I looked at some old school stats today. Roger Maris really went downhill FAST after his 60-61 mvp years. What were the reasons, injury?

A couple reasons that one of my favorite authors, Roger Kahn, cites are:

1 - Mantle was a very charismatic dude - Maris was not. NYC loved him.

2 - The NY media didn't care for the style of Maris....so they continually pressured him. He didn't fare well with that pressure - just the way he was. The pressure drives some guys, it kills others.

I wasn't there, but Kahn seems to have witnessed it all.

I "should" know more history on Maris after all Hibbing, Mn is about 100 miles from by front door. Also I faintly remember my Dad talking about playing on the same team as Maris in College. I have heard the stories about Maris flipping off fans, not getting along with the media, but I didnt know that was his downfall. Stats wise.

Where were youth mentioned? How do you know the abusers were not from your generation?
