How to clean a medal like this? Thanks.

I recently acquired a medal from the bay. I thought it was just dirts. After I got the medal and found them kind of rusty. It is a very nice medal though. Does anybody have any suggestion as to how to clean it? Thanks.

Just speculation as it appears (?) to be a plated white metal. I think you are up against it in the cleaning department as that is a complicated oxidation reaction going on there if my speculation is correct and so solvents will not be enough. Museum type restoration via reduction electrolysis might be necessary if that is the case.

I have in the past experimented with this and there are internet articles that deal with it but the results are a bit patchy. Again it is speculation as to what is going on as per above but if it is plated the very plating metal is setting up a battery reaction with the metal it is plated on. Yikes...
