Nice set! Good luck with the sale. image

You're going to have to break the set up to get that price.

Most sets are worth less as a whole, and more as individual cards.

Start scanning for E-Bay. Good luck.

You may need scans of the cards....i know a psa 7 set is worth bunk to me if its not eye-candy...im doing my set in 5-6.5 centered....and getting some great deals on great looking cards....

    1960 Topps guy,
please enlighten us on which sets are worth more as a whole.
Standard Topps vintage sets, sell for the most when broken up.
I have done this numerous times with the 1961 and 1954 sets, and nobody
is willing to pay a fortune for those sets. Always a percentage of SMR.
    When broken up, more $$$.

The breakup value before any fees is about 15K.
  • Sorry, I stand corrected as I have no evidence to support my comment.
  • 19541954 Posts: 2,898 ✭✭✭
1960toppsguy- you are not necessary wrong on your thinking. In most cases breaking the set is better however there are collectors out there willing to shell out the coin to buy a set that is strong like DRS. It is always in the best interest for the seller to offer it as a complete set first because there are guys that prefer to buy a finished product.

I sold a complete 1960 set in PSA 7 (with some 8s) for around $9,200 on eBay (paid $20 final value fee). The guy who bought it from me broke it up and sold all of the cards on eBay for a total of $9,300. Obviously by the time he paid eBay listing and final value fees, he came out well behind in the deal.
  • I am not too interested in selling cards via eBay (too much of a hassle for me)

I would prefer to sell this collection privately to a collector mostly interested in adding this set to his/her collection

That being said, am willing to sell this set for $15K

If an interested buyer wants cards scanned, let me know (not sure I know how to add scans to this thread, so send me your email address)

I sold a T200 set and a Cracker Jack set for considerably more than the sum of its parts. And it took considerably less time. I don't agree that breakup is the best way to go.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

If I still needed the set, I would have already purchased it for that price. Unfortunately/fortunately I've already got one.

Especially when you assign any value to your time. You really have to know what your doing either way, sometimes breaking makes sense, sometimes selling the whole works is more efficient.
  • What is SMR on this set? Thank You

Not that I ever care but I find it quite humorous how some guys get lit up for listing an item for sale here when others dont.

    DRS...

I'm a bit above you in the Registry "Teddy Ballgame" set. I've been collecting the set for quite a while and am very familiar with the tough cards. You may want to reconsider your selling the set as a whole, even though it may be a bit of a hassle to scan all 206 cards. The SMR is really just a guide, and a poor one at that. IMO it is way low on several cards, commons and stars. With a straight PSA 7 set you will do much better to break it up and realize many of the card's true value. Just a few cards to consider are Hegan, Keegan, Fowler, Rivera and of course Koufax, Clemente and Snider to name a few. You may want to package some commons in a lot and sell them that way. Of course once you break the set you would be committed to a lot of sales. Again. the SMR does not give a current market value to your cards. If you have access to VCP, you may get a much clearer idea of the value of what you have. A tough call to make to go individual, lots or as a set. If you just gotta have the coin quickly, I guess keeping the set together makes the most sense, but I honestly think you are doing yourself a disservice, some of the cards you have are indeed tough to come by and don't come up very often on eBay.

    GL selling your cards.

    Al - Teddy Ballgame
  • Right now for that set all in PSA 7 we have a value of $15,218.21
  • Thanks, Al - Teddy Ballgame

In the past year, have just about sold 2 complete PSA 7 1952 Topps Master Sets privately (have about 70 cards left from over 975 PSA 7 cards in these collections - still have 1 PSA 7 complete PSA 7 1952 Topps Master Set) - if any readers are looking for 1952 Topps PSA 7 cards, let me know and will tell you what I have left

Also sold a complete PSA 8 1957 Topps set privately a few weeks ago

Not selling these collection because I need the coin - my interest in collecting is not what it used to be

I will either sell this collection as a whole at a fair price or will keep it - don't have the time or the interest in selling these cards myself via eBay - if I decide to break up the set, will let this board know and then will consign the rest of the collection to a dealer who will sell them for me (but right now, am not going to break up the collection)

I think the difference is that if someone is trying to sell a complete registry set, this is a reasonable place to do it (PSA SET REGISTRY FORUM). If David was selling single cards or anything unrelated to the registry, he'd probably be told to move his post to the buy-sell-trade forum.

Also, being a member here since 2002 can't hurt.

If you decide to break the set up, please let me know in advance, I would be interested in some of the higher dollar HOFers.

  • Good luck with the sale Dave. If you still have this set a year from now let me know. It would be the next set to pick up in my 1952 - 1953 - 1954 Topps PSA 7 run.

  • I already made a rather large transaction with david regarding the 52's...

As far as the 55's...VCP on every card in a 7 is below, if you take into account what is costs for shipping and add it to the total you are saving at least 1500.00 off what it would cost to build the set, so its a fair deal!! ( assuming a 15K purchase price)

One thing to consider, and for me it's a biggie, is eye appeal (namely centering) of the cards. While it looks like the VCP prices shown above are the 'average', that doesn't tell the whole story. A psa 7 clemente that's centered with good colors should fetch more than the $2,318 average. Take several of the high end cards in this set and apply the same, and the price should fluctuate in that direction.

Some set builders are sticklers for centering, others for color, corners, etc, or a combination of these. Some just buysubmit the flip because it says a certain grade. So, while 15-16K seems the talk here, I would adjust my paying price higher or lower based on the eye appeal of he critical cards and the general eye appeal of the set total.

I just checked VCP and that is the price calculated at the last price and not the avg. price. I personally would not pay an avg price, but prefer the last price on a card.
  • Lothar52Lothar52 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭
I'm doing the set and I don't care about the grade.....every card must be exactly the one i want....(and have a grade from 5-7.5) hehe
  • I agree with BugontheRug concerning eye appeal. I think on these higher grade sets the difference in value can be quite a bit especially on the higher value cards. In my own 55 set I have swap out quite a few PSA6's that didn't have nice eye appeal for ones that were almost always better centered. As a result if I did ever want to sell it I would probably ask more than the VCP average.

    David,
I might have an interest in buying it. I don't know if you have my work number still but I would like to catch up on things. I sold my set last April if you remember and I got $11,900. My Clemente was a PSA 8oc and my Williams and Killebrew were PSA 6's. I also had 11 PSA 8's in the set with the only real value being #166 Bauer. Are you selling the PSA 7 1952 Topps set too? I know that you had the three complete sets back around 4 years ago and you sold the two recently.

    Regards,
    Shane
