A great many commemorative collectors are familiar with the thick and thin silver medals struck to commemorate the Norse-American Centennial celebration in 1925. There was some original intent that regular commemoratives be issued, but in the end, Congress only authorized a medal. The denomination was dropped and an octagonal shape used. Still, for years, these medals were collected with official commems, and spaces were provided in books and display boards. The medal was designed by James Earle Fraser, the designer of the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. His name is evident on the reverse of the medal.
