if that isn't a pin hole in his cap.. but I think it might be
Decent card.
Steve
I also think it is better then a 2.
Steve
GOOD LUCK! It's a nice looking card.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

<< <i>The reason I said I see no pin hole on the reverse is because if one was on the cap (below the Y in NY) wouldn't it show through to the back? Or on some of you concerned that it is more a pin p--k (that does not go through to the back)?
Steve >>
What I see as a possible pinhole is on the seam of his cap, right above the bill toward the right side of the card.

p.s. ... Terry (Smittys), your '53 Mantle looks like a solid 3.5 - 4 to me also.

This is a superb 3 for a 1953 topps.

I've looked at hundreds of psa graded '53s and would guess yours to be a 3, 4 if you're very lucky.

I have a question to those with more experience on 53s...on the back at top left where the circle (baseball) is around the card number it is partially cut off at the top...is this why the card may have graded so low?? I would have thought that since part of the card back is cut off that the card would have been graded as a MC??
Appreciate thoughts on this...

OTW said it was a PSA 4 all day long, and it was every bit of that. The card had some nice eye appeal to it, so apparently that warranted another .5 in grade. I bought the card from Smittys and then sold it, and was happy with the result.
Buying Vintage, all sports.
Buying Woody Hayes, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, and Jesse Owens autographed items
I would not say it was a very generous 4.5 etc.
First off we are seeing only a scan of the card.
Burgandy saw it in hand as did Smitty.
As a matter of fact looking at my original post I said:
"On the low end it is a 3 on the high end a 4."
Of course I never saw it in hand.
Steve
but due to a ruff cut.
If you are talking about the white at the middle of the red at the bottom I think it is missing ink.
Their really is not much difference between a card grading 3 and one grading 4.5
When you get down to those lower grades it is mainly technical grading. Those cards have flaws
and depending on the grader it could grade between 3 and 4.5, heck possibly even a 5.
Then you can see a card graded 3 that makes you scratch your head.
Plus you could send that card in 10 times and get 2 or 3 different grades too.
In any event I would not pay a premium over what a 4 goes for, for it myself.
