USPS insurance claims

So I have a card not make its destination. It was not signed for because it was under 200. But it did have delivery confirmation. According to USPS.com tracking, it never made it out of Oakland, CA to its destination.

It has been a month since I mailed the item. Claim is pending. Anyone know how long this takes?

Also, the buyer wants me to refund him BEFORE I get a decision from USPS. I already told him I must wait for USPS decision. Am I right to not yet refund?

I think you should refund the buyer's money now as he shouldn't be castigated for what apparently is the fault of USPS.

As long as 30 days has passed I'd pay the refund out of pocket then I would wait for the claim to be paid.

I agree, it looks like the buyer didn't do anything wrong so he should get his refund. The insurance is between you and USPS so you should send the refund. A good buyer would give you a great feedback if you refund him before USPS settles with you.

  • Hi Barry,

I also agree that a refund is in order. Think about it ... as a buyer, what would you be expecting the seller to do at this point?

Sorry to hear it happened though.

    Refund NOW.

They buyer would be right to NEG you for making him
wait for the money. JUST telling him to wait, prolly
already pist him off enough to NEG you.

In the very unlikely event that your USPS claim is denied
for any reason, use the appeals process; it works.

I know you work for USPS...how long does this take? For the record, he did not pay for insurance. I am the one who paid for it for my own protection. Who is more lucky that I insured it? lol

    Barry

Remember as a seller you are obligated to make sure the buyer gets his item.

Insurance is for your protection not his.

Sorry this happened but it has happened to all of us.

Did the buyer pay with paypal?

    Good for you.

Yeah, he paid with PP. I'll refund him now. This is a big PITA. I decided to look at his feedback and its perfect with many transactions. Now that I look more, I see that he's probably not trying to scam me.
    Thanks for the input everyone.

Since he could have simply forced it since he used PP I'd say he is a good ebayer that
if the item does eventually show he will either send it back or repay.

I'd leave him a positive feedback too.

Something like: Thanks for your patience, sorry again.

I'm a carrier, so I don't see most insurance stuff, but IIRC my wife told me that all claims are now processed in a central office, I think in St. Louis. If that's the case I would expect your claim to go relatively easy. USPS had the item, now they don't. It's not an expensive claim.

Always buy insurance for any amount you don't want to lose. You can try to get the buyer to pay for it, but if you don't insure it and it gets lost or broken he will almost always win a SNAD complaint. You advertised something nice and he got something that was broken, or he didn't get anything. You did the right thing paying for insurance.

I'll ask her tonite when she gets home and maybe she can tell me how long it takes now. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT AND THE EBAY AUCTION PAGE!

"Something like: Thanks for your patience, sorry again."

    /////////////////////////////////

Making sincere apologies in FB is counterproductive for both seller/buyer.

It makes the seller look like he might have done something "wrong."

It makes the buyer look like he might be a "problem" for another seller.

    .........

Insincere apologies are not in the above category:

"I am sorry that my perfect conduct caused you to wrongfully leave me a NEG."

Jim from what I have heard it takes about 30 days from the day you file.

As for leaving feedback, if you think it is counterproductive simply email the buyer and thank him for
his patience that way. Saying nothing and simply refunding the money could lead to a negative as well.

    Communication is key.

I know as a buyer I appreciate the seller that sends an apology with my refund.

After all neither of us has done anything wrong.

I've had to file 3 within the last 18 or so months. The first for a lost package, the latter two for damage. The first two took 10-12 days, the last took about a 35 days.

    Hope that helps.

Of course. That's the way to do it.

I did not mean "don't leave FB."

I meant don't apologize in the FB.

It's bad enough that buyers can leave whatever FB they wish, and on top of that now sellers have to worry about what impressions their FB may leave? Geez, LOL..

Wife said it's much much faster if you file the claim online, and gave me a number to call to check on your claim. PM on the way with the number -
