SGC to PSA Experiences and Advice please

Again I dip into the vast wealth of knowledge everyone here has. I have a vintage football 57 Starr graded SGC 88 (8). I wanted to know about sending to PSA for a crossover. I do not want to crack it out and throw the dice. What experiences has everyone had with sending cards in for the crossover. Thanks as always.

  • I would not recommend cracking it. If you send it in for a crossover review, your best case scenario will be a PSA 8. No chance it comes back higher. In other words, leave it in the holder it's in.

Thanks for advice, that was my thinking, but you guys (and girls) are more experienced with these things than I.

You've got to be sure to crack, and should plan on multiple resubmissions - so there should be enough dollar increase (or hassle reduction) to make this worth your while.

I have had some good success stories and some not so hot. If the cards are centered well I think it is worth a shot with SGC graded cards.

    The best
1973 Topps Joe Morgan SGC 88 to a PSA 9
    1965 Topps Tony Perez (R) SGC 88 to a PSA 8.5
1967 Topps Joe Morgan SGC 88 to a PSA 8.5
1972 Topps Pete Rose in action SGC 88 to a PSA 9
    1967 Kahn's Pete Rose SGC 86 to a PSA 8

    the worst
1971 Topps Reggie Jackson SGC 88 to a PSA 7
1968 Topps Tom Seaver SGC 88 to an "evidence of trimming"
1973 Topps Tony Perez SGC 92 to a "does not meet minimum size requirements"

All of the above were crackouts.

If the card is a legit NM-MT card, then I would suggest a straight crossover review. Success rates have been pretty decent for accurate material. However, if it is a NM-MT+ card, you may be better doing the crossover then cracking it out and resubbing. It's a vicious game, but sadly, it's the only way to play it if the quality is there and you want to minimize the risk while eventually getting the card into the holder it deserves.

I've had really nice success doing the crossover then crack out and resub. The last few have been straight crosses, then ended up with full grade bumps on the crack out and resub. When you're looking at a $800-1200 increase on a full grade bump, the time and cost works out. It helps having a good enough eye to know whether the card warrants a sizable bump.

I'm sending both of these in for crossover review with minimum grades of 7. The SGC card has already been reholdered by SGC with a new flip (same grade).

I think the yellow letter (BGS) one might come in at a 7.5. The other one I'd be happy with a 7.
  • The one on the right will likely come back an 8 because it was graded using the old BGS not BVG standard. Much, much, tougher on vintage cards.

Crack them, I'm telling you any grading company doesn't want to give up higher grades on crosses, sending slabbed stuff in I've had tough luck, cracking it and sending in I've had very good luck sending BGS to PSA. Both those Aaron's look great.

The 58 YL has some print that may keep it out of an 8 holder. That is a huge card in an 8 and they will use any reason to knock it down.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • That beckett Aaron needs a straight crossover. Don't try and cracking it! It scares me to even think about cracking out such a nice example such as that! I see potential as a psa 8 if they don't take that blue print circle into consideration.... Good Luck! Leave the aaron in the Sgc holder that is most likely a straight psa 7 .My opinion... See what the more experienced people have to say about this though.
