New pick up / Is it common to see one of these with over 50 chop marks?

I used slightly different light between pics...

I've never seen coins with that many chop marks. Thanks for posting them.

Wow, everyone in the market place had a shot at that, that's amazing.

It's not "common", but also not really unusual enough to be called "rare". I've seen Japanese yen that were almost unrecognizable.

However, they are rare in the condition of mrpotatoheadd's.

The Mexican 1872 peso in mrpotatoheadd's picture was a type the Mexicans
    made for only two years.

Chinese merchants didn't like the design and would discount it, although it had the same
amount of silver in it as the 8 reales coins.

That might account for the many chopmarks on what would be a coin unfamiliar to
    Chinese merchants.

Mexico went back to the 8 reales design until 1897.

Very interesting. I bet you're right.

I don't collect pesos, so I had to see what they looked like, Mexican Peso 1871-1872.
I collect history in the form of coins.

Just a minor correction- depending on the mint, the dates range from 1869 to 1873 for this peso type.

You are right, 1869 to 1873.

It is an interesting story that Mexico was forced by another country (China) to revert
to it's old design for it's peso (8 reales) coin.
