These truly are some of the nicest examples for date and grade in the very elusive Old Green Holder.
IM hoping Teletrade gets the pictures correct many toned coins from this collection need to

  • best of luck too you image
  • Yep time will tell in this soft market for Franklins...Pics have been uploaded to Teletrade and I have to say they are close on a few missing the boat on most all. Disappointed to say the least...the coins look much better than these Teletrade pictures show...
  • ..........Well, I gotta say -

I think T.T. did as good as they could on your coins ; I have seen much, MUCH worse pix on coins I submitted to them image

I know if I was buying , I would make very strong bids on several of them .

Those coins in the O.G.H's were clean , very few marks and top notch . I think you will do well indeed
  • Not going to put any reserves on any of the coins so it will be a true high bidder wins the auction...
  • are they eligible for the half price sellers fee promotion they just came out with for 2 weeks?

I wish you luck on your sale - Sunday is by far their best day to sell, and it isn't a holiday

the green 'old slab' icons are yours?

I will spend some time looking as usually I just scan on auction day if I am not buisy and put in a couple lowball bids

as many coins have very optimistic reserves by sellers
  • Found out about the 1/2 price too late and Teletrade wont let me "redo" all the OGHs are mine...

I hope your right, if not you may get a real steal depending on the bidders...

    Nads of a Mastadon"..

That reminds me of what women want in the four animal groups...

    1). A lion in bed.

2). A mink in the closet.

3). A Jaguar in the garage.

4). and a Jackass to pay for it all....

  • I bid up the 59-D to more then you were orig. asking image , but that sweet '54 in MS66 ........somebody ripped that @ 210$;boy that was a clean coin.
  • Ok so here is the ugly truth, I have know for a long time Franklins were in the toilet, and still dropping. The coins I sold and what I paid were off about 2000 bucks!!!!!!!!!!! I knew I would be taking a beating but holy s$%# I got screwed at the same time and no one handed me the vaseline!! IM an expert in the series all I can say is stay away unless you love the coins you are going to get royally screwed as an investment!!!!!!DO NOT BUY THESE COINS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM ABOUT THROWING MONEY AWAY!!!! FRANKLINS ARE THE # ONE WORST INVESTMENT IN THE COIN MARKET, IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME FEEL FREE TO TRY THEM... HAD ONE OF THE BEST SETS AND STILL THE MONEY TO INVESTMENT RATIO IS ONE OF THE WORST EVER... THIS COMING FROM A PERSON THAT LOVES THE SERIES......THIS IS THE TRUTH! ON A NO RESERVE AUCTION...tread lightly buy because you love the coins...

I am sorry to hear about the disappointing auction results. I have a steadfast rule that I do not allow auction companies to sell my coins or my customers' coins without me being able to place reasonable reserves on the coins. I refrain from doing business with companies that try to convince me that it is best for me to place coins in their auctions reserve free.

Regarding Franklins specifically, my top 10 set (I just haven't added a coin or two to the set to move the set into the top 10) has also been a below average "investment" for me compared to the majority of other sets and coins I have purchased in the past 10-20 years. I grew up with the coins and built the set because I really enjoy the series. I had no great expectations of making a great deal of money with the coins and I have not been disappointed with those expectations. Sure, I will have some coins bought a decade or two ago that should upgrade down the road when I chose to let PCGS see them again - but, the coins that will remain in the same holder I acquired them at years ago have not performed all that well (with the possible exception of my 53-S in MS65FBL).

But, the fact remains, the Franklin series is a super series to us "baby boomers" and may become a very popular "retro" set to the next couple of generations as time goes by. I am not selling my top coins anytime soon regardless of the annual rates of return on the collection.

As always, just my 2 cents. Wondercoin

  • I did not have high expectations going into the sale of these coins, knew well in advance what the probable outcome was going to be, and I really do love the series. Have not seen a such a bad place to put todays hard earned dollars in the coin market than the Franklin series. Have watched it floundering for quite some time, high end Franklins just dont hold much value unless you really love the coins and money is not an issue as a return in the future. There is no way the prices can rebound with the pops still rising as time goes by. For the good news, it could have been a much bigger loss....
  • Hey buddy , with all due respect : the coins were put up with no reserve's in a market that we knew was deeply in the crapper .

A couple of others tried the T.T route in this down environment , and even with reasonable reserves -they got slaughtered.

It is a sad crying shame that your very nice coins brought just shy of squat............there must have been very few serious bidders.

I bid that 59-D up to more then you orig. wanted ( i think skyman bought it image) , but that was all I bid on -

apparently nobody else was in the game ..........

I went over to Teletrade with about 1/2 hour left in the auction. I was looking for this collection to possibly bid on a couple coins - usually Teletrade will call the collection something (e.g. the Worst Collectible In The Marketplace Today Collection").

I clicked on half dollars and scrolled down to 1948. First thing I noticed was there was no 1948-P being offered??? Maybe I missed it, but, I couldn't find the 1948-P. Then, I saw there was absolutely no identifying description that linked all of the coins in the collection to easily ensure that I was bidding on this particular collection. So, not being able to even start with a 1948-P coin to examine and not having this #12 set even described in the coin descriptions to make sure I was bidding on coins from the #12 set, I left the site.

For those collectors considering a sale like this one, it is probably a good idea to make sure all the coins in your collection are identified in the auction descriptions.

i think the seller thought after posting his set on the BST board here and his posts in the Registry Forum that it was going up at Teletrade with links here and there to the PCGS #12 Set , that he covered that base .

Myself ? I comb every single Franklin that shows up on T.T , every auction , every week

of corse I got the time to do that and I had followed this #12 set all along the way ; from it's building to its dismantling

Consider that now is the absolute worst time to be selling your prized coins.

The Dollar is tanking to all time lows, Global Economy is sucking the proverbial bag
and a huge number of people are losing jobs, Homes and more!

With so many negatives working against you (and ALL OF US), if all you lost is
Two Thousand Dollars - really .... you did quite well.

You CAN recover, if you play your cards just right.

BTW, I totally agree with Lucy's statement.

This is true of any & ALL series.

  • Yep, knew well in advance this was going to be gloomy. The part that stung the most is I started the set 7 years ago. But the bulk of the coins were bought in the last 10 months. ( Wanted to sell before they dropped any lower.) If the loss was streched out over 7 years it could be easier to take, but losing 2K in such a short time sucked. I knew the series had been taking a beating for a long time also knew it was not the best of ideas buying high grade examples. IM one that truly loved the series and OGHs are rarer that most know. So basically another leson learned be careful how much you want to spend if buying a nice Franklin you can get stung thinking it mayl hold that purchase price value...

    i gotta say ;for example............

that MS66 1954 ; I paid 400$ for it around three years ago , and had I any freakin money I would have gladly paid at least 300$ to have it back

the 52-S in 66 ran me 300$ + from J. Schuch about 6 years ago ......that one was a jewel too

like the feller's said - there is not enough money available to pay what those coins were worth - at least thats my story

look for some of them to re-apear on eBay for alot more then what they were ripped for !

No offense, but in my mind, enjoying, collecting and assembling a beautiful set like you did (I have seen every pic listed on your registry set), then unloading it for a mere loss of $2,000 amortized over seven years doesn't really seem that bad to me. I would be proud of the accomplishment, especially since the set was high quality and consistent in assembling coins graded during the strictest and favored stage of PCGS (OGH) If you were a wine collector you would have drinken it away, golfer, you would be ten thousand dollars lighter or more.

I know $2,000 is good money, but notice the financial times we are in when you went to sell. I think as collectors our sense of collecting worth is built into not only buying the right coins, but having them appreciate as proof of our collecting acumen. It is how we validate we are skilled graders and patient buyers. However, it need not be the case if one's goals are achieved and the search was rewarding and enjoyeable. That is why they call it a hobby.

Great job on the set, and quite an accomplishment.

I see a few of your coins that "sold" at T.T. 30 days ago are back on Teletrade ; and some have CAC stickers now !
  • I miss the coins a bit but took such a beating and they continue to dropping in price Im happy I have the cash in hand. Franklins are and always have been one of my personal favorites, but were one of the worst places to have invested some money, and these days loosing any more is just plain stupid to me. Cash is king now days and Franklins are like flushing money down a toilet...just makes no sense unless you got money to burn....
  • PawPaulPawPaul Posts: 5,845
interesting though how a couple of yours are right back in T.T. after less then 30 day turnaround with CAC stickers ......

like there going to bring way more with the sticker ......right ?image
  • PawPaulPawPaul Posts: 5,845
    oh - and I double checked - I paid 480$ for that 1954 in PCGS 66 !!!!!!!!!!!

  • << <i>like there going to bring way more with the sticker ......right ?image >>

Had I kept the set would have done the same thing had as many CACed...but for a quick turn around with TTs fees have to say..

I agree with you....WTF are they thinking? image[/

Sad confirmation on the current trend for a nice high end coin....

    something fishy ..........

    seller buy back....

    ..if seller buys them back I think they do not post a price realized ;

this was an attempt to imply CAC coins sell 4 more ........
