My Non-Sport Cards TTM Autograph Adventure Updated 12/19

I have always been inspired by the TTM threads on the sports board but for one reason or another (since the 80's)I have never sent any cards TTM for autographs. A couple months ago a fellow board member Heritageaddict (Doran) mentioned a site in a pm to me called Startiger. I joined the site but again never found my way to sending any cards. Last week I bought a couple of packs Topps American Heritage cards and after being impressed with the set have set off to getting some of the cards signed. I would like to focus my attention on getting non-sports cards signed as it seems I have been collecting a lot more celebrity based sets lately. Well 7 days after I sent out my first 3 letters I recieved my first response!! I got a card back signed by Julian Bond. The topic of the card is the March To Montgomery a march in which Mr Bond participated. I'm very happy to add this historical piece to my collection. He also included his business card. I will update this thread as I get more responses and if anyone would like the address I used just send me a pm. Thanks for allowing me to share.

  • Hey ROCKDJRW,

Good luck on your nonsport TTM collection!! My current hobby focus is the same thing, except it's for Magic:the Gathering card artists rather than actual people pictured on cards. I've gotten over 150 different artists to sign, and amassed over 6000 signed cards - a crazy amout of work, but tons of fun. I've met many wonderful people along the way, and gotten all kinds of neat letters and promos too. Hopefully your pursuit will be both as fun and as fruitful image

Thanks for the kind words! 6000 Autographed Magic cards????!! I didn't even know there were that many! How do you catalog and store that many? How many letters do you send out a day?

  • LOL - oh yeah, there's lots of Magic cards; I'll be at this for a long time image

Truth be told, not all the cards are Magic; some are other CCG cards like Rage or Vampire. In addition, I also have duplicates of some cards (to use in decks that I play). I probably have around 3500 different signed cards, and about 6000 total. I have all my sets in albums, while my playstock I keep in 4000 ct. boxes. I have a 3-ring binder with all my card lists and contact info, sorted alphabetically by artist (a huge project, but necessary).

As for contacting, I spend quite a bit of time tracking them down online first - since they're freelance artists, most have websites or are active in some online communities. After I find some contact info I send them a nice email telling who I am and ask if they will sign - about 50% reply yes (the rest mostly never respond). The amount of artists I mail out to per week varies, but it's around 2-3. I've been at this for almost 4 years... I'll probably be at it another 4 (or 50, lol). Overall I really enjoy this project, but my enthusiasm does ebb and flow over time. I've taken breaks too, but I always get back into it rather quickly.

Keep us informed on your progress and good luck image

  • I recently got back Alan Alda and Al Pacino. It is a lot of fun to branch off, and collect other auto's. I don't play MTG, but I do like a lot of the artwork, and have thought of collecting some of the artists auto's.
  • Hey brianwintersfan,

Welcome aboard - nice to see you chime in. I think your TTM thread over in the sportscard forum was one of the first (at least the first I saw). I do know it is where I picked up the term "TTM" (lol). I always wanted to post over there, but figured I'd stay out with my nonsport stuff.

Alan Alda and Al Pacino? Two very nice autos to get image. The only non-Magic autos I have are a couple of Sci-Fi show actors I got years ago at gaming conventions. Truth be told, while it might be fun to branch out, I really need to try and keep my hobby time ( and money) focused these days image

Did you get Pacino TTM? I did as well and was told that all his TTMs were secretarial ... Here is what I received ... Could it be authentic?
