RYK, posted a rather insightful thread the other day about what is a rare coin. He states that to him its any coin with less then 100 graded survivors at PCGS. The 1866 half eagle total number of survivors graded by PCGS and NGC combined is 92 coins! POP information was gathered from Heritage.

I agree with his statement and my collection backs it up. Most of the seated quarters and 1860's-1870's gold I collect are extreme rarities with tiny mintages.

That's a nice half eagle and a tough date, in fact this coin supposedly is tougher than the 1866-s no motto half eagle which had a much smaller mintage of 9,000 coins.
