Since we're on the subject tonight. I figure I'd refresh this thread for the newer members. To the newer members, what is your opinion on this subject?

I'm married and there are enough other people who have posted who are married to prove that coin collecting/dealing is not keeping people from dating/marriage. Imo If you are involved with coins and WANT a relationship but can't make it happen, it's not the coins.
I was an only child growing up and my father shared his father's coin collection with me. My Dad would bring home rolls of coins on Friday night and we both would look thru them thru out the evening.
He was the impetus of getting me involved in a life long hobby. Although I am not married, I have had meaningful relationships. I am content being single as I devote my free time to my own obsessions... Ie: coins.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Great thread ! " I collect coins " is info about myself that I generally keep under my hat...with the exception of my ex and a couple of buddies who collect too, there aren't many folks around town who I'd reveal it to....particularlly women !
Even though I bought the gal I've been dating a vintage love token bracelet for her birthday, I still don't feel any compunction to burden her with the knowledge that I collect anything.
I'm 57 and have been married 35 years to the same wonderful woman, who has raised 7 kids and countless dogs, cats, hamsters, turtles, birds ... I collected coins before we were married and though I slowed for a while when I started my business I never stopped looking. She has no interest in my collection but knows enough to pick "different looking coins " from change. She pays no mind when I drop thousands on a half cent so ugly most people would cring. She trusts my decisions as I always trusted her decisions while raising our family. This year, we went to the EAC convention in Buffalo together- she had a great time and she looks foward to next year in Ohio. Guess that makes me one of the lucky ones for the record.
I'm married and my wife takes a mild interest in coins, if I have a really pretty looker she might be interested to see it but usually she prefers not to ask how much I paid. She does sometimes let me look through auction catalogs and let me show her some of the more interesting coins. However since I'm going to have a little junior in a couple months, I probably will have to put off any big purchases for a couple decades.

i started collecting young because of my dad. @16 all my money went towards cars/motorcycles and girls. after graduating from college, i got back into coins & was with my future ex wife at the time.
A while ago I started this thread and responses were interesting although this sensitive topic hit a bit too close to home for a few of our resident lonely guys. I feel in certain ways this subject complements the thread about female collectors. So I case you missed it...

I don't know if this has been mentioned before in this thread, I have not read it all, skimmed some of it.
I think it might be the way collectors look at money. I am fairly young and unlike a lot of people my age, I would rather buy some silver or buy some coins. When I spend money on different things I think of it in terms of silver, coins and investments usually. Maybe coin people weigh the opportunity cost of spending money more so than the typical consumer, which leads them to go out less or spend less on a relationship (not that a relationship should be based on money, but it helps) than others.
Just a thought.
Edit: Reading some more there seems to be some people who think the same way.
According to many of my male friends and fellow collecting buddies, you've gotten the wife at least 2 kitchen remodels in that time frame, if you're really serious about coins, that is.
<< <i>...And coin collectors tend to save their money for coins.

Polar opposite here, my wife saves for stuff, I spend all my money before I even get it, ha. I'm the one always going out and having fun and spending all my money, she's a homebody. >>
If you read this exciting new thread it perfectly illustrates why hot babes shun the hardcore Coin Nerd. I mean I'm into Coins of many types - moderns , classics, even medals, but to get excited over a couple distorted numerals in a coins date? Get serious !
I got married a few years ago and it pretty much stopped my collecting. Just don't have the time and money anymore. I still keep up on the forum though and even visited a coin shop two days ago with wife. I did make a purchase too- antique buffet/sideboard the wife liked.
Interesting thread. I suspect the same personality traits that lead to social awkwardness/no luck with the ladies are traits that lend themselves to endeavors such as numismatics.
As far as initial conversations, there is no reason to bring up coin collecting. Anyway, keep the conversation on her (and hope she doesn't start talking about her bunny collection or cats...)
There were a few mentions about time. That is a crock of crap. If you want something you have the time. If you want to date someone you will 100% make the time. If someone tells me I have a tee-time at Augusta National tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. I will find a way to be there.
I actually didnt start collection till after I met my now wife. She likes the fact that I have a hobby that i turned into a full time job. There has to be a balance of time thought to keep things in perspective, always looking for more things we can do together. Most of her family is fascinated by the work I do and always has questions for me.
Now as for other coin dealers here locally heres their marital status. Some of these are co-workers. Single and will be forever. This is the anti-social type spoken of in other posts. Also has no trust for others. Married 35yrs 2nd marriage(8 years) first lasted 20yrs Divorced Married 3rd marriage Engaged
I explain this in an article already vetted for publication in the next quarterly "Psychoanalytic Review". It's titled "Rock Gods, Geeks, and the Women Who Love Them".

I dont know about any one els but i never had any problems i've been marryed for 26 years and going strong..... I think if and when you find the right one it just clicks. And my girls sell coins not at shows but on eBay as well but they have other job's that keep them from doing it full time. There is only 24hr in a day so you need to use it wisely. Here are my little girl's Amanda is on the left and Emily on the right. The way i tought them was when they asked for $$ i gave them a coin or two to post on eBay then they had to look it up to sell it. New they just ask for key coins so much for that.
